On a clear, beautiful day nearly two weeks ago we welcomed around 850 locals to the SAFFA Festival Isle of Man 2023. The Nunnery gardens were washed with beautiful September sunshine. There were children and families everywhere, kuiering, chatting, communing. There was braaivleis, milk tarts, koeksusters, bunny chow, biltong and boerewors. There were 40 makers, bakers, artisans, and pop-ups with arts and crafts, pet food, fashion, jewellery, handbags, candles, and so much more. There was a Kids Zone with cricket from Peter Kirsten Cricket Academy, tag rugby for the littlies with former All Blacks player Mark Robinson, crazy golf, face painting, lawn games, Playball Isle of Man, and a pop-up birthday party. There was stiff competition from three entrants - Seaboard, The Four Musketeers and Bokbef&% - in the first-ever Potjie Master Competition powered by Robinson's Fresh Foods, judged by Garth Shnier, Mohammed Motala and Ingemark Coxhill-Schoenpflug (which was won by Seaboard, with their lamb potjie in a giant gem squash). There were two national anthems - Arrane Ashoonagh Vannin and Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika - sung side-by-side. The occasion was graced with the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, Hon Jane Poole-Wilson, and Her Worshipful the Mayor of Douglas City Council, Councillor Mrs Natalie Byron-Teare, both of whom gave speeches filled with warmth and acknowledgment of the contribution of South Africans to the Isle of Man economy and society. None of it would have been possible without the vision and connections of June Whiteman of the Isle of Man Chapter of SA Chamber of Commerce UK, and our headline sponsor - Standard Bank Isle of Man - who believed in the vision. The support of these two organisations gave others the confidence to support a first-time event.
