HALLOWEEN WEDDINGS!
Thinking about getting married at Halloween? You may be surprised to read that Halloween was actually all about getting married way back in the mists of time! A couple of thousand years ago the Celts believed the veil between this world and the next was at its thinnest on Halloween night making it the perfect time to tie the knot as the marriage would not just last for the duration of the couples lives but for the afterlife too! Today it is celebrated in the Pagan calendar to welcome in the harvest and usher in the dark part of the year
In Pagan Ireland Samhain was celebrated on November 1st and is the Pagan new year. On October 31st, the eve of Samhain, the spirits of the dead were believed to revisit earth. Masks and disguises were worn to blend in with the demons and the visiting dead so that the living were not recognised and be kidnapped by the evil spirits or fairies.
It wasn’t always seen as a scary time. Traditionally people felt closest to their dead relatives at this time, the spirits were considered friendly and places were set at the table for them. Candles were lit in windows and homes to help the spirits find their way home.
Halloween was also all about finding your husband or wife or trying to tie the knot. Many old customs appeared over the years and around about the 18th century in Ireland a ring was hidden in a circle of mashed potato. The lucky person who found it was said to find their true love. Nuts were also burned in fires to reveal the name of the person you would marry . For the braver maidens, standing in a dark room at Halloween and looking over their shoulder into a mirror would reveal the image of their future husband… let’s hope it wasn’t one of those demons.
Today Halloween is becoming more popular as a wedding date and data reveals there has been a 10% rise in Halloween weddings in the UK with 271 weddings recorded last year (Hitched 2023) . It can be a time to get really creative with dark or ric
It’s Halloween, it’s midnight and the veil is at its thinnest between our world and the afterworld when spirits are said to cross over. Strange things go bump in the night. A few wedding professionals got together to produce a Halloween piece for fun. The full Halloween tale is on our page please look and share! To all who took part a huge thanks.
