But let me add that if someone was a truly awful person forget the saying "Never speak ill of the dead". Just couch it in terms that don't make them sound quite so bad but admit they were no angel.

I once officiated at a funeral in which, when asked, the son of the deceased said that he and his sisters couldn't think of one thing they'd liked about their mother. I managed to write a whole eulogy without offending anyone but without painting her as a paragon of virtue. The son shook my hand afterwards and said he didn't know how I'd managed it!
