In this photo I am 19 years old. I know I look more like 12. I was just gaining weight from 5.5 stone. I had also just come out of a wheelchair. At 18 I was in a fatal car accident which led to me being on life support for 2 weeks, 4 months in hospital, then a revisit to hospital. Followed by a journey of learning to walk again. Even now every Consultant I see says it is a miracle I can walk. At the time it was a miracle I lived. I will never forget the look on my dear friend’s mother’s face. I became institutionalised. I will never forget the first time I tried to write a letter afterwards and feed myself or the pain trying to take my first steps. I learnt that through it all you can still help others and be inspirational. There is much to be grateful for. I also learnt what it feels like to be the victim of prejudices. I will never forget sitting in my wheelchair in a large shop, I had been parked at the end of an aisle. A little girl ran into the aisle and stopped when she saw me. She did not move or say anything. Her mother arrived, saw what she was looking at and as she pulled on her arm said, “Don’t look at that it’s abnormal.” Prejudices are taught! People would cross the road rather than walk past me. I take good care of anyone who is disabled or has mobility issues at my services - I know what it feels like. I make sure they receive the care and attention they need, without undue fuss.

I was a Queens Guide. To achieve this award takes pretty much all the years you are a Girl Guide, dedication and work as many badges have to be achieved and a lot of voluntary work done. Many life and people skills are learnt along the way. Alongside this I helped with the local Brownies and Cubs, weekly and on camps. My Patrol were the best and we did so many activities together, it was great watching younger teenage girls blossom. Young leadership and guidance. We put on a couple of short plays for less privileged children from London at Christmas time, this was the beginning of writing short stories for me, alongside poetry, something I enjoy and now get to do as a Celebrant.

From a young age I knew I wanted to go into a caring profession and at the age of 11 decided on Physiotherapy. Through school holidays and college work placements I had the opportunity to work in Physio departments. I am a very focused person but we learn through life that sometimes a bump appears in ‘’the road of life’ and we are forced to change direction. This bump, which will appear in another post, occurred and led me to becoming a student nurse rather than physio. Nursing taught me so much about many things. It is something which comes in very useful when families talk about medical conditions and how their loved one died. I took great honour in ‘laying out’ someone when they died, ie preparing them to be taken from the ward. A last act of care and respect for someone. I also thought it important to care for the loved ones visiting someone dying.

I am an Independent Celebrant, work I am very proud and honoured to do. This summer I completed the Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Funeral Celebrancy, making me the 9th person in the country and 1st in the south of England to obtain this qualification. Helping people to say goodbye to a loved one, supporting them at such a difficult time is a real honour and I ensure every ceremony whether a funeral or memorial ceremony, is individual, personal and celebrates the life which has come to an end here. With or without elements of faith, my ceremonies reflect the persons life. Everyone needs the opportunity to acknowledge the death and say farewell, whether in a funeral service or a memorial ceremony following a direct funeral.

From next Monday I am going to post for 10 days which reflect who I am, have been, times in my life which have led me to where I am today and I believe make me the Celebrant that I am. Some photos that won't have been seen before, and quite scary to think I am now going to share publicly.

Happy for you to share this post with others that might be interested to learn about me and my Celebrant work.

Yesterday morning I left the blue skies and clear waters of Mallorca. It was an impromptu decision to go away for a week, 4 days beforehand. The wonders of technology mean we can work from anywhere as long as no services booked in. But it was a first for me yesterday, landing at Gatwick at 2pm, home at 4pm (jct 10 was closed), unpacked and showered and out the door at 5pm and in a family meeting at 5.30pm. Nothing is too much for families who need my services. Music , tributes, etc all booked and service sheets are ready for printing in time for Friday’s service ❤️

Thank you for another annual weekend of catching up with old friends and new ones made, including my Level 4 assessor, learning and sharing and a bit of dancing. Great discussion on the ashes issue, 250,000 ashes not collected in the U.K.!

Celebrant led ceremonies provide personalised ceremonies to fondly remember, say farewell and celebrate a loved one’s life. This may be on the day of the funeral, commonly called a funeral service, or afterwards - days weeks or months, mostly known as a memorial ceremony. Both are Celebration of Life ceremonies, focusing on the life lived. As a Celebrant I can help you make the right choices for your loved one.
