We are taking a break

Hello! After two years of running Govanhill Community Markets, our team decided to take a yearlong break. Huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the first market, Street Feast, Food Stories and Harvest Fair editions, all workshops leaders, market stallholders, community meals and open mics participants, volunteers, our partners, collaborators and funders.

Here is a very condensed reflection of what we did together with Govanhill community:
🎪 4 markets with 1700+ attendees overall
🍭 43 market stalls
🎺 Free programme: 13 workshops, 2 community meals, 2 open mics and 3 special music and dance performances
🎥 2 movie screenings in collaboration with GAMIS
📙 1 community recipes zine in collaboration with Glasgow Zine Library

It was such a beautiful journey and we are looking forward to bringing more street celebrations to Govanhill after our break.

Meanwhile, stay tuned as we are hoping to bring different kind of events later in the year.

Govanhill Food Stories Community Zine is available online!

At the Govanhill Community Market in August as part of Govanhill International Festival and Carnival and the , Govanhill residents shared stories, drawings, favourite dishes and beloved recipes at the pop-up exhibition. With the help of Glasgow Zine Library and editor Polly Rappaport we collated all of them in a beautiful zine, which can now be accessed online on the Govanhill Open Museum website!

Thank you everyone who joined us for the Harvest Fair last weekend as part of the The Climate Fringe Festival. What a great ending of the markets season!

Big thank you to everyone who brought dishes to the community meal, everything was so delicious! Food not Bombs Glasgow and Two Eight Seven bakery provided free soup and organic bread – absolute legends!
It was great to learn how to make a sauerkraut with Foragerium, buy second hand clothes, pastries from, handmade gifts and herbal remedies, try Mediterranean dishes, experiment with natural textile dyeing with Lily and India, grab a copy of Greater Govanhill CIC magazine and Govanhill Food Stories zine, learn how to make nettle cordage and get a face paint with Indre Simkute, learn more about activities happening in the area with South Seeds, plant your own little flower bed with People’s Pantry gardening group and perform and listen to some tunes and spoken word!

And what an epic ending of the day with everyone on stage! Ania and Barry, thank you for being such fantastic open mic hosts and Music Broth for providing music instruments.

Thank you everyone who joined us for the Govanhill Food Stories Community Market last weekend! What a fun day it was!

It was a great opportunity to try an exciting variety of food made by community organisations and food businesses from Govanhill and beyond and to learn stories and traditions behind the dishes. Try delicious coffee and pop-corn at the Eritrean coffee ceremony led by UNITY Sisters and explore links between migration, colonialism and food systems in a fun session with Tunvii Khurana and Diana Jiménez (Nourish Scotland) as part of ‘Our Rights, Our Communities’ project.

Buy handmade jewellery from local makers from Romano Lav women’s group, grab a fresh copy of new Greater Govanhill CIC issue, get a face panting from talented Ruby Sullivan and reflect on what memories and feelings bring specific spices and herbs with Rumpus Room .

It was a fun day to swap clothes and books at the swap stall by Swap Market and contribute to the FEN mobile library.
Also, we gathered a fantastic collection of recipes and stories about dishes at the pop-up exhibition that would be collated into a zine by Glasgow Zine Library .

Last Tuesday we went down to the Amina Muslim Women's Resource Centre workspace in Shawlands to deliver a craft workshop with the Women's Friendship Group. Thank you for having us! It was so fun!

As the theme for the 13th August Market is 'Food Stories', we took visual inspiration from Eric Carle's 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' which uses paper marbling and collage techniques to represent fruits, ice creams, cheeses and other delicious goodies!

Our outreach coordinator Rebecca shared a very simple paper marbling technique which involved shaving foam and food colouring. Then we used the paper to cut shapes to make bunting for the market.

Come see the bunting that we made together with the Women's Friendship Group at the Govanhill Food Stories - Community Market on the 13th of August at the Batson Street Laboratory!

Swap Market Stall + FEN library at the Govanhill Food Stories - Community Market – 13 August

We will be joined by Feminist Exchange Network running a Swap Market stall during the Govanhill Food Stories market event on the 13th of August. Everyone is invited to bring in donations (clothes, books, children's clothes and toys, household items etc.) from 11AM onwards in exchange for points that can be 'swapped' for other donated items throughout the day.

✏️ Why not share a story with your donated items? How and when did you get it and what does it mean to you? We look forward to chatting to you about the value of objects or just sharing a lovely afternoon!

📣 ALSO – Paid Opportunity with FEN!

Feminist Exchange Network is looking for a swap market facilitator for a pop-up stall at the G42 Pop-Ups market on the 13th August:

-The role involves attending the stall, accepting items for donations
and facilitating swaps.
-Proficient speakers of languages commonly spoken in the Govanhill area
encouraged to apply.
-The market will run for 4 hours with additional time for setting up @ £12/hr.
To apply contact: [email protected]

📚 About the FEN Library

Our growing collection of books began at Swap Market, a non-monetary exchange space we ran in
Govanhill, Glasgow from 2018-2020. We began collecting books that looked at different types of
economy, community networks and alternatives to the capitalist system. As the project grew and
expanded our reference book collection has grown to include books on decolonisation, climate
justice and environmental activism.

For the Govanhill market this August, Maria Tolia and Zineerah Ali will be leading creative sessions to
introduce people of all ages to some of the books in our collection.
