Goal vs Purpose

I get asked a lot. And I mean a lot. Why should I bother to make time for self care, I get pleasure from my work / being with others / leisure pursuits? Usually I take a breathe and consider my audience before replying.

To have a goal is to have a target. Something that you’re aiming for, striving to achieve, even training for a specific outcome. Usually involving actions, doing things. My goal is to....(you fill in the gap)

During previous times when I was doing more coaching, helping people in the business sector in Bristol whilst I was running the Complementary Health Clinic at the Wellspring in Barton Hill, we had a structure to create a plan. The required outcome were various, some career focused, others personal. And there s one I remember more than others. More than the lady I told I was unable to coach as she presented in a way than would negate our time together. Right timing is also key, but more of that later

After discussion, identifying issues, one man’s outcome was to have a lunch break. This was back in 2005. We had explored his marital concerns, his lack of time for family events due to work, how the harsh business practices of his office environment was affecting his confidence. His goal emerged; to take a walk at lunchtime.

Can you imagine your homework being to make time for something you not just love to do, but you ve identified as a key component in making your life come into balance. The outcome was he went on to inspire other colleagues and his home life improved as he was able to leave work ‘at work’ to have time at home.

His lunchtime walks in nature brought him back to himself. That wasn’t just a goal, it became a purpose.

What I feel I need

Stoat boots
On solid ground
Earth holding me close

To stretch
My sinews
And lengthen my stride

To feel the chill of winter air
And breathe easy
Easier that before

If you seek some counsel it should suit your style. Maybe that is on a walk instead of sitting indoors, with pen in hand formulating plans, thinking comes first and walking is scientifically proven to aid this process
