In the Shape of an Oak Tree: music for durational guitar after John Smeaton, civil engineer
Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, University of Leeds, LS29JT
Wednesday 4th December 2024 8:00PM
This is a programme of four new works for durational guitar, curated and commissioned in response to the life and work of John Smeaton, civil engineer. Smeaton’s work paved the way for countless aspects of modern life. A central thread of his work involved the direction of irregular forces—particularly the movement of water, both at sea and inland—to regular uses that work with these forces. He developed water wheels, water engines, a “hydraulic lime” mortar that will set underwater, and worked on a significant expansion of the British canal network. Huddersfield-based composer and guitarist, James Creed's practice with the durational guitar—the building and steering of ever-recording two-second loops—is not the same, of course, but in preparing this programme and project James reflected on the overlap: a shared concern with the regular approach to irregular things, going with materials rather than building against them.
