Described by Gramophone as, ‘spot-on in interpretative instinct’, the Aquinas Piano Trio has established itself as one of Britain’s most sought-after chamber groups. The Aquinas Trio released 3 discs of Haydn trios on Naxos between 2022-23, all to universal acclaim, with The Strad remarking ‘The Aquinas Trio brings flawless ensemble and a lively intelligence to these relatively neglected pre-1770 works’

22/06/2024

On the 13th of July you and your family will have a chance to experience at first hand - via a sing along - the beauty of Francesco Scarlatti’s Dixit Dominus.

Then, at 7:30 PM, you will have a further chance to hear some of his divine music.

In fact, you will have the only chance anyone in Wales has ever had to hear two newly discovered Scarlatti masterpieces: a 16-part Mass and a piece called Dixit Dominus. Neither have been performed in Wales previously.

So who was Francesco Scarlatti (aside from a very handsome man, as per pic 3 above)?

He was born in Sicily in 1660 into a prominent musical family. Often his fame was overshadowed by the musical fame of his own brother Alessandro and nephew Domenico.

A Baroque music composer, he lived and worked throughout Italy as well as London and Dublin, where he died in relative obscurity.

Having been overshadowed by other family members, it was the relatively recent discoveries of 3 of his works that have brought Scarlatti to the attention of classical music connoisseurs worldwide:

The scores of Scarlatti's Dixit Dominus and Messa a 16 voci were found in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, and his Oratorio - called Daniele - was discovered in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and received its first modern performance in 2024.

This latter "discovery" has being hailed as "the greatest classical music find of the century."

For a chance to hear Scarlatti's genius in person, come and join us on the 13th of July.

Tonight, the last night of the Festival for 2023, the Cantorion John S. Davies Singers will perform Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem Mass, and a selection of favourite classical choral pieces for the second half of the programme.

Jennifer Walker – Soprano.
Stephen Hamnett – Bass.
Jane Watts – Organ.
Conductor: John S. Davies.

In his seven-section Requiem, the French composer, Gabriel Fauré, distilled some of the most beautiful melodies he ever composed.

Of all seven sections, the Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei and In Paradisum emerge as the most glorious, filled with rich, soulful melodies. The work garnered the praise of many other composers – not least Camille Saint-Saëns, who thought it divine.

Admission: £20.00

About Last Night …… last night we were challenged with a philosophical question:
Is like a or is a like .

Well, you be the judge of that.

We’re just here to say that Saoko and Simon Blendis were the best possible introduction to Max Jaffa’s salon music.

Thank you both for a splendid, faultless, evening.

And thank you for bringing along Jaffa’s priceless’ Pietro Guarnerius’ violin.

If you missed last night, the Blendis’ CD, “Love is like a Violin”, has already had over two million streams, and is available to purchase, or listen to, online.

Last night we were transported to the heart of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire, Vienna, with the help of Britain’s favourite clarinettist, Emma Johnson, and friends.

It was another pitch perfect evening which almost had us all waltzing down the church aisles….

A huge thanks to all the superb musicians and also to for your patronage.

What’s On Today?

Lunchtime Recitals - 1pm - St Teilo's Church

Come along tolisten to Wyn Turner, a local organist, giving the first of our lunchtime recitals.

Our Lunchtime Recitals are free.

This means that you can pop in to have a listen, and to relax, and still your mind, while enjoying beautiful classical music, without worrying about tickets.

Evening Concert - Tales from Vienna - 7pm - St Teilo's Church

Wyn's recital will be followed by Emma Johnson and Friends, who will take centre stage in the evening to perform Emma's arrangement called "Tales From Vienna".

Emma is one of Britain’s best loved clarinettist. At the age of 17 she won BBC Young Musician of the Year and the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York. She studied Music and English at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and then embarked on her music career on a full time basis. She has performed all over the world and is one of the UK’s biggest selling classical artists, having sold over half a million albums worldwide.

Emma and Friends will begin their performance with four great chamber works:

Beethoven's Septet Op.25,
Mozart's Clarinet Quintet K581
Schubert's Octet D803 and
Brahms' Hungarian Dances 1 and 3.

These "quieter" pieces will be followed by Strauss and Lehar, the Blue Danube Waltz, and the exciting and much loved ‘Radetzky’ March.

Admission for this evening concert is £20.00 per ticket, including a glass of sparkling wine.

Many thanks to Castell Howell Foods for sponsoring this event.
