Hi, I'm Berni B 👋🏻

I'm an Independent Celebrant and End of Life Doula.

Culturally we're a bit rubbish at talking about the inevitable: death.
But it doesn't have to be a scary thing 💜

As a Celebrant I specialise in Celebrations of Life
and as an End of Life Doula I advocate independence and authenticity of my clients.

The stories of our lives and the memories that we share contribute to the legacy that we leave behind.
And I truly believe that when we reach the end of our lives, our individuality deserves to be celebrated ✨

Need help with death planning?
Want the stories of your loved one told in a unique and bespoke ceremony of remembrance?
Know that you need to put your wishes down on paper but don't know where to start?

What can we learn from the ancient tradition of Dai De Los Mu***os (or Day of the Dead)? 🤔

When it comes to death, we're not the best nation!
We tend to avoid conversations, bottle up emotions and restrict remembrance of loved ones to funerals.

But this has a huge impact on our mental health.

💫 Grief does not have a shelf life 💫
It is a process that adapts and changes as we grow as people.

This means that we can remember and celebrate our loved ones years after their death, rather than feeling like we should be 'over' it by now.

The ancient Aztecs knew the benefit of the festival, so perhaps we should take a leaf from their book when it comes to remembrance.

✨This Day of the Dead I will be at the Legacy Fayre in Llanelli talking all things death and dying - from will writing to funeral wishes, celebrations of life to end-of-life care.

Join us on Saturday 2nd November at Saint Elli Shopping Centre, Llanelli from 10am - 4pm.

What ways do you honour your loved ones? 🧡

You Don’t Just Lose Someone Once.

You don’t just lose someone once.
You lose them when you close your eyes at night.
And as you open them each morning.

You lose them throughout the day.
An unused coffee cup.
An empty chair.
A pair of boots no longer there.

You lose them as the sun sets.
And darkness closes in.
You lose them as you wonder why.
Staring at a star lit sky.

You lose them on the big days.
Anniversaries.
Birthdays.
Graduations.
Holidays.
Weddings.
And the regular days too.

You lose them in a song they used to sing.
The scent of their cologne.
A slice of their favorite pie.
You lose them in conversations you will never have.
And all the words unsaid.

You lose them in all the places they’ve been.
And all the places they longed to go.
You lose them in what could have been.
And all the dreams you shared.

You lose them as the seasons change.
The snow blows.
The flowers blossom.
The grass grows.
The leaves fall.

You lose them again and again.
Day after day.
Month after month.
Year after year.

You lose them as you pick up the broken pieces.
And begin your life anew.
You lose them when you realize.
This is your new reality.
They are never coming back.
No matter how much
You miss them or
Need them.
No matter how hard you pray.
They are gone.
And you must go on.
Alone.

Time marches on, carrying them further and further way.
You lose them as your hair whitens and your body bends with age.
Your memory fades.
And the details begin to blur.
Their face stares back at you from a faded photograph.
Someone you used to know.

You think you might have loved them once.
A long time ago.
Back then.
When you were whole.

You don’t just lose someone once.
You lose them every day.
Over and over again.
For the rest of your life.

There's one thing guaranteed in life, that one day we will die. We DON'T want to think about it and we certainly DON'T want to TALK about it.

This weekend I will be at The Legacy Fayre hosted by The Legacy Lounge

We will talk about all things Legacy Planning from Wills, Lasting Power of Attorney, Funeral and Celebration of Life wishes... you name it we'll be talking about it.

Elopements and Hand Tying I love both, together they become my favourite thing. I went with Freya and Daniel to an ancient oak wood near Castell y Bere, overlooked by Cadir Idris. Pix By Vix captured the occasion - there's a Real Couples Blog post pending but... check out this review and a few of the magical photos

Your new Vice President 🎖What an honour!

I have just been made the V.P of the Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC), our trade association.
🗣 I'll talk more about who and what the AOIC are in another post, but like all unions its about giving a voice to the people of that trade.

It's so special that those at the top of the AOIC are all working Celebrants, yet come from a variety of backgrounds and have an enormous pool of knowledge to pull from and utilise 🧠

Such an honour to be a part of this organisation and to be recognised as one of the leaders this year. I look forward to talking more about the role and giving regular updates! 📣

As always, if you have any questions comment or DM and I will do my best to explain or signpost wherever I can.

The 'independent' part of the title is important because it describes what I can do as a Celebrant.

In very simple terms it means that I can do ANYTHING (so long as it's within the law).

So I can add any tradition / custom from any religion or faith or non-faith group.
Whatever is relevant to the person or people that are being celebrated.

Swipe through to learn more 👉🏼
and as always if you have any questions, send them my way!

14/10/2024

When you join the AOIC you become part of a supportive and proactive network of celebrants. We are here to support you throughout your celebrant career.

The Alternative Celebrant, An Alternative Path

My name is Bernice Benton, everyone calls me Berni, (except my parents who use the full name if they’re cross even to this day, and I’m 52!). Sometimes I’m Lady Lily the Pink of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party...

It took me (Berni) three years to take the leap of faith in myself and become the celebrant I'd been wanting to be.

As an individual who has spent the last two decades recognising the ordinary extraordinariness in everyone's life, I really had come to want to facilitate others in their own recognition, acceptance and joy at their own selves.

I began blogging about my own life: Rose Tinted Ramblings of an Ordinary Extraordinary Life, providing warts-and-all blog posts about anything and everything that popped into my head, in the hope that at least one other person would realise that feeling different is normal… we’re all different. I've learned not only to accept, but to enjoy, relish even, my own unique qualities and eccentricities. We all have them. We are each unique. And we should celebrate that.
