Here at Eltham Ceremonial Doves we say it with doves… well, in this case, pigeons to be precise.
This is our newest pair of ‘lovebirds’, rare Lehore pigeons: Pingu (brown, female) and Valentino (silver, male)

While we are dove release experts, we are first and foremost animal lovers and aside from our beautiful release doves, we have a whole host of rescue pigeons, rare breeds and general waifs and strays which have found their way into our secondary loft.
Pingu has been with us for about 6 months and while she has been happy and healthy, she has remained quite solitary, keeping to herself and showing little interest in the other birds… that is until Valentino joined the flock just 3 days ago. It was like they were made for each other, love at first sight… and let’s just say, watch this space: in about 2 weeks time we might just have a pair of Lehore pigeon eggs!

Update on our first 2 babies of 2024: at 7 days old their eyes are now open and they’re growing fast!
Rings are also added at a week old, when they are small enough that they can slide on easily, but big enough that they won’t just slide off again! These rings allow us to catalogue our new babies and help us identify them when they’re all grown up and absorbed into our flock of pure white doves.

This is how how our next 2 babies are getting on: they’re at the ‘spider’ stage 🕷️
This technique is called ‘candling’… but a phone torch works too! This shows us there is a little baby pigeon gestating in there, and they’re about 10 days from hatching

Our first 2 babies of breeding season 2024! They may look a little alarming at 2 days old with their yellow fuzz and still-closed eyes, but they are doing really well 😊
The eggs come in pairs which are laid and hatch a day apart, and the size difference is already noticeable. Hard to believe that in just 4 weeks these babies will be fully grown, fledged and ready to start training!
