Projects like the opening of Brent Cross West showcase how placemaking, through collaboration with local groups and the community, can lead to impactful and positive transformations in a local area.

Producing a community-led event such as this one and witnessing the positive impact of the new station has been incredibly rewarding, and we look forward to sharing news about our next 🎉

Collaboration with the community is a key aspect of placemaking and an element which were keen to bring to the opening of Brent Cross West…

So, we invited local businesses , and to offer goods at a market within the event and host a variety of workshops, including Christmas decoration making and steel band lessons. Artists from the Brent Cross area were also given the opportunity to perform at the event.

In addition to engaging with surrounding stakeholders to help ideate the launch, we produced a wide variety of infrastructure for the event, including a plaque to commemorate the station opening and exhibition boards showcasing the history of the area. Local artist was invited to curate a legacy piece for the station, and We Are Placemaking organised over 60 members of the community – from local schools and community groups – to help create the piece 🙌

A highlight included the grand unveiling of a ceremonial plaque by the , Sadiq Khan and Barnet Councillor

London’s newest mainline station to open in over a decade was celebrated with an impactful, community-led launch event, highlighting the importance of placemaking for communities as well as developers.

The event, produced on behalf of Barnet Council by We Are Placemaking, invited local residents, rail enthusiasts, delivery partners, local councillors and members of the GLA to celebrate the official opening of Brent Cross West station in North London 🚂

Brent Cross West is a part of the Brent Cross Cricklewood Regeneration Programme and marked the start of a significant journey. Not only does this station provide services to central London, but it also includes a new public overbridge offering new ways to get around the area.

Alongside the launch event, also wanted to put the community at the heart of the celebrations, which our team facilitated in a variety of ways…

Developers can benefit substantially from long-term placemaking installations, and our lights stand as a testament to this: our design was a long-term investment, crafted to blend with the existing market structure, and the installations will contribute to the aesthetic of the space for years to come.

This simple but effective design was also programmed to only occur during the opening hours of the market, saving on power consumption and costs. The aim was to draw visitors to the market - encouraging interaction with the stalls and tenants, increasing their dwell time and boosting Spitalfields’s Estate social media presence.

💡The value of our installations extends beyond the visual: by drawing people in and encouraging engagement, we had an average of 380,000 weekly footfall, adding to a total of 1.8mil across the whole estate from November to December. The installations create a dynamic atmosphere, transforming the market into a vibrant space and reflecting positively on the developers’ investment!

We installed a permanent site-wide lighting scheme at the Spitalfields Market, focusing on its three central areas: Lamb Street, Market Street, and Crispin Place.

Our concept was born from the idea of timelessness, modernity, and versatility, aiming to seamlessly blend with existing architecture yet stand out boldly.

✨ The ‘hero moment’ was featured along Market Street, consisting of 36 light bulbs displaying an array of colours and shades. For Crispin Place and the newly pedestrianised Lamb Street, we added 31 downlights, attached to the existing structures, allowing a spectrum of colours to paint a cohesive design across the entire area.

Over Christmas, wanted to install a creative and modern Placemaking concept that perfectly complimented the developer’s new contemporary space…

While Old Spitalfields Market embraces its rich history with traditional decorations, and a similar light scheme, Spitalfields Market looks forward to the future – championing new retailers, up-and-coming brands and independent businesses.

🙌 Our vision included vibrant lighting installation that would stand the test of time, creating a timeless ambience. These lights were a long-term placemaking investment, so a key objective was to ensure their design could discreetly fit within the existing structure in between seasonal schemes.

Placemaking events not only engage surrounding communities but entice tourists and passers-by, fostering curiosity and exploration.

The return of Frost Fair was a great example of this, driving footfall, enhancing a lesser-known space, and reviving this historical celebration. The event was even celebrated with a whole segment on ! 📹

Overall, events like the Frost Fair serve as powerful tools - activating areas for audiences far and wide.

From skittle lanes to horse carriage rides, jazz acts to acrobats, immersive actors, and a special cinema screening of Doctor Who, there was something for everyone at Frost Fair…

Our three-day programme of events kept guests entertained throughout, while over 30 artisan traders also offered a variety of goods in the market area with .

An ice sculpture also served as an interactive art legacy piece, raising funds for Manna Society, a charity which supports homeless people in London.

The ‘hero’ moment of this placemaking project had to be the lifesize elephant puppet, which mimicked the real-life elephant which paraded the frozen Thames over 400 years ago 🐘

We collaborated with to revive the Frost Fair - one of the most extraordinary events in the capital's history…

These historic gatherings, occurring on the frozen Thames from 1605 to 1814, transformed the river into a bustling market teeming with entertainment, food, and drink.

Our mission was to bring this extraordinary event back to life while celebrating the surrounding local community.

Better Bankside entrusted us to draw busy commuters and curious tourists away from the popular Thames walk and guide them into the lesser-explored corners of Bankside, offering opportunities to revel in the area's fascinating past…❄️

✨ Christmas at Borough Yards: Animating the space ✨

When curating this Christmas concept for , we considered the different elements within the area, such as the stunning brickwork and arches, and how we could best highlight these features. We wanted to attract visitors to newly developed areas, such as Dirty Lane, while also promoting all areas of Borough Yards.

So, we installed a lighting scheme throughout the site, with red and green up lights and white snowflake gobos - creating a warm, Christmas feel across the site.

Stay tuned to find out the final results of our project. ❄️

✨Christmas at Borough Yards ✨

We were thrilled to work again with , a multi-platform investment manager, to transform into a festive-themed site.

Our mission was to transform the space in a way that would engage the surrounding community, highlight the unique features of this new development, raise awareness of the area, and encourage footfall.

Stay tuned to find out how we transformed this space… ❄️
