Allow me to reintroduce myself!!

Hey everyone! 👋🏾 I’m Tinuke and I realise I don’t talk about my work much here, often in the spirit of humility. But this year, I’m changing that. I’m incredibly proud of the work I do - from advocating for maternal and women’s health with Five X More CIC , building an incredible community through Mums and Tea, to empowering early learning with Learning with Ez

As a public speaker, writer, and digital content creator, I’ve had the honor of contributing to platforms like Mastercard, Grazia, and Tesco. I’ve also been featured in some impressive media outlets too, speaking about topics I am super passionate about in the hopes for better outcomes for the community.

If you need to book me for your next event, need 1-1 coaching, would like me to deliver a workshop for your organisation, or write an article/ thought opinion then my contact details will be at the end of this carousel.

This year, I promise to share more of these journeys with you. Here’s to being vocal and proud of our achievements going forward!!

I often get asked by people who suspect a friends child or a child in their family might be autistic - what they can do (if anything) and I’ve always battled with this answer.

This can be a very difficult conversation if you 1) don’t understand a lot about autism 2) don’t meet the parents with a level of empathy 3) said parents may be in denial about it or don’t understand much about it.

I’ve written an article for on what you can do if you think a child you know and love might be autistic that I hope helps someone out there.

The more we talk about autism, raise awareness of symptoms and are not afraid to have these difficult conversations- the better chance we have of autistic children thriving if they get access to early intervention strategies.

Have a read via the link in my bio and let me know in the comments… have you ever had this conversation with a friend/ loved one before?

In the report MPs highlight missing and inadequate data collection on ethnicity as a persistent challenge as well as frustration that Black women are regularly underrepresented in research. Here is a breakdown of some significant data that has been gathered over the years on ethnicity and mortality in maternity.

For a full breakdown of interventions and suggestions to date to improve the safety of maternity services generally please read the full report via the link in our bio.

Today marks the start of autism acceptance week.

This is my son Ezekiel and he is 5 years old he was diagnosed as autistic when he was 3.

Autism acceptance to me means embracing my son for who he is and recognising that his diagnosis is just a part of him, not all of him. It means rejecting harmful stereotypes and challenging the stigma that still surrounds autism. It means advocating for his rights and ensuring that he has access to the support and resources he needs to succeed.

Acceptance doesn't mean denying the challenges that come with autism, but it does mean reframing our perspective to focus on the strengths and unique qualities that make our children special. It means celebrating their differences and encouraging them to be proud of who they are.

As a parent, I've learned that acceptance is a journey. It's not always easy, and there are still moments when I feel overwhelmed or uncertain about the future. But through it all, I've found strength and resilience in my son and in my amazing family, friends and caregivers who support him.

During this autism acceptance week, I hope that more people will join us in this journey towards understanding, compassion, and acceptance.

Autism is not a negative thing, but rather a different way of experiencing and interacting with the world that should be celebrated and accepted!

“Mummy whhhyyyy?”

So this morning Eden asked me why for the first time ever 😂👀

She was upset that her dad has left for work and when I told her daddy has to go to work so he can have money and buy you clothes and keep us warm she said “why” and I almost burst out laughing haha.

It’s important that I nurture that curiosity that’s growing now but it’s definitely a moment I won’t forget. Now roll on 1000 “why’s” a day because she’s at that age and stage now. Wish me luck lol

This is an appreciation post for my amazing son Ezekiel. He’s made SO MUCH progress recently and I’d love to share it with you.

He’s recently started reception and he’s in a mainstream school which I can’t lie I was scared about at first on account of him pre verbal and initially not fully toilet trained.

But this boy has shocked us beyond belief over the past 6/7 weeks since starting school. We are seeing more spontaneous speech, he’s more confident in using the toilet, he’s so happy he’s literally skipping into class, he’s made friends and he’s also sitting down for longer periods of time with the rest of the class during carpet time.

We recently had a parents evening and the teacher said he’s a joy and a lovely boy to teach and gave us much needed reassurance that he’s settling in so well into his new routine and class.

I want to end by not only saying how proud I am of Ezekiel for trying so hard and settling in so seamlessly in his new school and making so much progress but also to encourage any other parents out there with autistic children to PLEASE make sure you access all the support and education that’s out there and to be intentional about early intervention strategies. It makes the world of a difference!!

I’m as excited as the next parent about Ezekiel starting school in a couple of weeks, but the reality is it will come with a few extra challenges and things to work through, for both of us!

Following the success of the reel I posted the other day, I’ve written an article for expanding on my top tips and hopefully putting your minds at ease!

Check out the full article via the link in my bio, via instagram and it will also be left in my “autism” highlights.

Let me know if you have any other top tips you would add in the comments!!

If you know me, you know I rep south London HARD. I was born here, raised here, still live here and had my two children here too.

Today we are officially launching colourful birth wallets across south east London trusts and I couldn’t be more proud of the work myself and my business partner of life have done to get to this point.

For us, ensuring Black women have access to the right information to be able to advocate for themselves and feel confident in the whole process of pregnancy and Labour is first and foremost.

The aim of the wallets is to empower women to advocate for themselves and to promote healthy wellbeing in order to create safer outcomes. We have designed the wallets to hold maternity notes and on both sides of the wallets we have information for self-advocacy, wellbeing and advice for Black and Brown women.

You should be receiving your wallet in your booking appointment, but if you don’t have it yet, you can also request for it. Tell everyone you know!

If you are a health professional and your trust is interested in our wallets, please send us an email via the contact details in profile.

Yesterday was such an emotional day! My mum graduated from University and I am so proud of her. She’s the perfect example of the fact that it’s never to late to go for your dreams - finishing her second degree at 59!

My boy also had his last day at nursery and there were loads of tears. Ezekiel started nursery when he was 18 months old. He was a shy, quiet and clingy baby who preferred adult company or just played on his own. The nursery took him in, loved him as their own and over the years have been so supportive of his journey, despite the various challenges we have faced. Each and every single one of the staff there have had such an impact, especially his 1-1 support teacher. He’s made so much progress over the years. They always believed in him and went above and beyond and now he is leaving a confident boy, with friends, who is also saying a few words now (for context Ez got his autism diagnosis last year and up until the past few months he was non speaking).

I am proud of these two amazing people who inspire me daily. They show me that it CAN be done, no matter your circumstances!

Now it’s time to have the best summer ever!

14/07/2022

In 2020 there were more children’s books published with an animal as a main character than a Black child.

I will let that sink in.

33% of books had an animal as a main character vs 2.2% for a black main character. This number is of course much less for SEN children.

As a self confessed nerd and someone that has always loved books from an early age, books are a way to teach children about the world they live in. You open up their imaginations and help them to appreciate their own cultures as well as other peoples. You can teach them about emotional intelligence while having fun. You expand their vocabulary.

Having more books published about animals than an actual demographic of children is a completely missed opportunity and I want to be a part of solving that issue.

My mission is to write a book with my son as the main character as a way to introduce autism to children in a friendly way. It will speak about the strengths and challenges an autistic child may face while encouraging children to be kind.

Because in a world where you can be anything- we should encourage our children to be kind and to accept differences.

Join me in my mission to write this book (and other resources to help our children) and donate to our kick starter today! Link in bio to find out more!

Being a girl mum is the absolute best!

Happy Sunday everyone, I hope your week has been filled with joy and that you get to rest this beautiful sunny Sunday, ready for the week ahead!

P.s. there’s still time to pledge to support our campaign so we can write our first children’s book teaching all about autism and helping to raise kids that are empathetic and understanding!!! Link in bio to find out more

We have just over two weeks to go with our kickstarter!!!!!

We aim to release 3 new products that are engaging and fun for autistic and non autistc children to communicate their needs and teach young children about autism from an early age in a way that is inclusive of Black children.

This is an absolute game changer as there is nothing like this currently on the market, despite the fact that the prevalence of autism is higher in the Black children.

If we reach our goal we will be helping parents and children everywhere to communicate and understand more about autism.

We ask that you support us by clicking the link in our bio, pledging to support the campaign and sharing the link in your networks to help spread the word. Thank you!

Earlier on this year we were angered and shook to our core in the Black community by the awful treatment of Child Q. I wrote an open letter to the commissioner that was signed by some inspirational people doing great work in the community and a number of celebrities.

As a result of this letter we were invited for a meeting with Steve House, Head commissioner of the Met Police that took place yesterday.

There were some honest conversations around stop and search, child Q, what training the police officers had (or didn’t have) and lots more food for thought around moving forward. We all spoke about where we were coming from as parents and members of the Black community as a whole.

I left the meeting feeling a bit hopeful as they seemed open to our suggestions but we have to remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. Hopefully this is the start seeing some real change.

Small ripples make big waves.

Shout out to the ultimate dream team and everyone who signed the initial letter (which can be found on my blog):

Today marks one year since receiving the autism diagnosis for Ezekiel. 24th June 2021 was the day it all changed and I’ve written a blog post reflecting on how the past year has been so far, speaking of the highs and lows and everything else in between.

I’ve also got a very exciting announcement to make!!!

On Monday I will be launching a kick starter campaign to raise money for 3 new products!

Currently there aren’t many visual aid tools specifically for Black and Brown children and even less diverse books teaching children about autism.

With your help we aim to launch our daily routine cards, toilet training cards and our first children’s book to introduce autism in an age appropriate and easy way. Our new cards are brilliant for helping those who need visual aids to communicate and for all children to establish good routines and healthy hygiene. Our book will help children everywhere to be more aware of autism and teach them to be kind!

I’m so excited to finally share this with you on Monday and can’t wait for you all to be a part of this journey in helping us grow.

Keep your eyes peeled on the page for all the updates!

I’m excited but nervous about Ez starting school.

According to the school report last year:

* Three quarters of parents said their child’s school place did not fully meet their needs

* Only one in four parents are satisfied with the special educational needs support their child is receiving

* Seven in 10 autistic children say that the biggest thing that would make school better is having a teacher who understands autism.

The last one really hit home. Most children with autism attend mainstream schools but they don’t feel like the teacher understands them or their needs.

As Ez starts school in a few months, I’ve been feeling a range of emotions both positive and negative.

As much as I want to go in all guns blazing I know I need to have a positive attitude despite all these statistics. My aim is to work collaboratively with the school, not against them. From speaking to other parents and a few experts, you have to be smart in the way you approach the teachers and school system as a whole.

This journey has taught me so much about myself and I’m developing new skills everyday. It feels like I might need to brush up on my negotiation skills though!

I can only do what I can do, but I can do a lot.

Swipe to see some tips for send parents whose children are starting school and let me know in the comments if you have any more to add! We are all in this together!!

The other day I went to a friends house and I broke down because I was so exhausted. Looking after a child with additional needs is not an easy job at all. It’s another layer of parenting that I am trying to figure out every day. I have great days and really bad days… but I always just get on with it because what else can I do?!

This week is Carers Week. It is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.

To all the parents out there caring for children with additional needs - I SEE YOU 💕

If you are new on this journey, I would encourage you to join as many parent cater groups in your local area as they are full of gems of wisdom and advise from people in your area going through similar things. I also have an online tribe within my online communi-tea app- send me a DM for the link to join a group of black mums who just get it
