Bespoke or made to measure—do you know the difference?
The word ‘bespoke’ in particular is so often misunderstood and misused, but understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision about what would work best for you when you embark on your wedding dress journey.
1. Made to Measure: This involves taking pre-existing patterns and altering them to fit the client’s measurements. The process typically starts with a standard size, which is then adjusted based on individual measurements. While it offers a better fit than off-the-rack options, the design choices are somewhat limited, as the styles are generally predefined.
2. Bespoke: This is a highly personalised approach where the garment is created completely from scratch based on the customer’s specific requirements. Multiple and extensive measurements are taken and then a unique paper pattern is created by hand. The bespoke route offers endless customisation possibilities on styling, design choices, fabrics and finishes. Each piece is then uniquely hand-crafted, ensuring a perfect fit and personal style.
The choice between the two depends on your budget, time constraints, and the level of customization desired. Each option has its merits, catering to different needs and preferences.
Esme’s wedding collection was created using the bespoke. Working with the dress designer , a series of outfits to span the weekend were designed to suit Esme’s exacting requirements. It was an in-depth and lengthy process but each piece was exquisite and the craftsmanship incredible. Esme’s main wedding day dress included various accessories that could be added or taken away to adapt the look throughout the day. We also had a bespoke tartan designed that was made into a mini suit for Esme’s son; bow ties for the Groomsmen and also sashes for the bridesmaids. A unique crest was designed by hand and then used to make cufflinks and buttons.
