Our belated Team Tuesday catch-up today was full of Christmas cheer - and festive leftovers! 😋

In our 'positive focus', we talked about looking back over 2022 and celebrating what we achieved, instead of making New Year's resolutions that put unnecessary pressure on an already hard month. New Year, same us!

Team Sunflower are looking forward to getting stuck back into our current event projects, with site visits, planning sessions and venue enquiries all lined up for the rest of the week.

If you're running events, meetings or even parties in January, we hope you'll find this post useful; we've pulled together relevant UK bank holidays and notable events that might affect your plans...

We start the brand-new year with a bank holiday, which is observed on 2nd January, as 1st January is on a Sunday.

In Scotland, there’s also a bank holiday on 3rd January – and of course Burns Night on 25th January.

If you’re running any events with catering in January, it’s worth noting that lots of people do or (or both!), so make sure there’s plenty of vegan and non-alcoholic options on your menu.

Our lovely Sunflower colleague Nicola turns 40 on January 7th so we'll be wishing her a very happy birthday🎂🥂

No team meeting or lunch to document for this week, but here's a cute flashback to two of the Sunflower families walking to school together in the snow before Christmas! We had to set off at least 20 minutes early to allow time for making snow angels and throwing snowballs for the dog...
There's also a very impressive snowman made by Hannah's little seedlings⛄️With tennis racquets for hands, we've named her Naomi Snow-saka!

The Sunflower office will now be closed until 4th January 2023; there will be light email checking and our phones won't be completely turned off, but we hope that all of our clients, friends and followers take time out over Christmas to relax and re-energise after another busy year. Team Sunflower has a weekly catch-up meeting every Tuesday - often checking in virtually if we are away. We find that it's a vitally important point in our busy week to update each other on events, celebrate successes and share information.

We always start each meeting with a 'positive focus' - everyone has to come up with a happy moment, feeling or event from their week. It doesn't have to be centred on the business, and often isn't as we are all mums as well as Sunflowers!

After our catch-up, we usually gather for a team lunch, sharing food or just bringing leftovers from home. This week it was a very special festive lunch in Epsom, where we've been for three years of Christmas meals!

We are going to try to post something from our meetings each week, as a way of getting to know us (and our lunches!) a bit better.

It’s the little things that count!

On Remembrance Day this year, Sunflower Event Team ran a virtual event for a client. As part of our regular pre-event checks, we ensured that we discussed with our client building the two-minute silence at 11am into the agenda, to honour the Commonwealth armed forces members who have died in the line of duty since WW1.

We informed all the attendees at the start of the event that we’d be observing the silence. The event had a global audience, so we let them all know that participation in the silence was not a compulsory part of the event. We added to our checklists for speakers and hosts to wear a poppy if they wanted to.

This got us thinking about those little details that we always build into our to-do lists and highlight to our clients. There are the obvious event dates to avoid – public holidays and school holidays, but we also pay attention to religious festivals and holidays, and other key events too, like certain international awareness days and major sporting events.

As a result, we are now planning to post a monthly reminder for our followers, to let you know what’s coming up, so here we go...

One of our regular clients is holding their annual conference at Edgbaston Park Hotel this week; we've booked a couple of events there this year, and already re-booked one for next year!
It's a lovely location, on the University of Birmingham's leafy Edgbaston campus, close to the city centre and transport links, with a great mix of old and purpose-built suites for up to 250 attendees; the elegant boardrooms (one pictured here) have original Arts and Crafts interiors.

Over the summer, reflecting on the past amazing 10 years of Sunflower's events, we came to a decision on our company name.
We know most of our clients already call us the Sunflower Event Team, and that's the handle on our social media too, so we have tweaked our name (from Sunflower Corporation) and logo to match. It's a small change rather than a rebrand, but one that we feel reflects how our customers and clients see us. Here's to the next 10 years!
