Hitchhiking microbes on ISS ( ) cargo ships can make astronauts sick.
Countless of these tiny organisms, which piggyback on astronauts and cargo flights launched to the ISS, can produce hibernating burrows in the form of complex matrices of cells. These cells are called biofilms, and they're found on the space station's surfaces, space suits and water systems.
While many species of microbes are beneficial, harmful ones are capable of evading the human body's defense system and damaging tissues.
Now, a silicon-based lubricant seems to be a promising solution to mitigate microbial biofilms onboard ISS.

The research is described in a paper published Aug. 16 in the journal Npj | Microgravity 👉https://bit.ly/3RzdMLF

Scientists at Bangor University (UK) have designed poppyseed-sized nuclear fuel cells capable of producing all the energy needed to sustain life on the Moon. 🌕🚜💨
This new energy source will power the future lunar base, from where explorations to other planets will begin.
Hopefully, the micro-generators could also be used here on Earth, for example in disaster areas when electricity is cut off. 👏

In our space touring exhibition 👉 bit.ly/3QN6t2e, you will be able to see the TOILET of the International Space Station up close.
In this ESA video, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti shows us how to use the toilet in the International Space Station.
A suction fan prevents bad smells and floating "waste". Solid waste is stored and loaded onto cargo shuttles that burn when the spacecraft leaves the Space Station, while the astronaut's urine is recycled into drinking water.

Today (Aug. 30), one of the biggest and brightest moons of the year will rise.
This full moon is referred to as a Blue Moon, a term that can represent one of two things: Either the third full moon in a season that has four full moons; or, more commonly, the second of two full moons that fall in a calendar month. And just like the previous full moon on Aug. 1, this Blue Moon will also be a "supermoon," a popular term for a full moon that occurs when our natural satellite is closer to Earth, making it appear just slightly larger in the sky.
A so-called "Super Blue Moon," the combination of a Blue Moon and a supermoon, happens less frequently. While it's possible for there to be two Super Blue Moons in one month, the average time between them is 10 years and they can be separated by as much as 20 years, according to NASA.
The next Super Blue Moon won't occur until 2037.

“INDIA IS ON THE MOON”, Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, the chair of the Indian Space Research Organisation, said as the -3 spacecraft’s Vikram lander touched down near the little-explored lunar south pole in a world first for any space programme.
The successful landing marks India’s emergence as a space power as the government looks to spur investment in private space launches and related satellite-based businesses.
The anticipation for a successful landing rose after Russia’s failed attempt and as India’s regional rival China reaches for new milestones in space.
In May, China launched a three-person crew for its orbiting space station and hopes to put astronauts on the moon before the end of the decade.

The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission ( ) is a JAXA(宇宙航空研究開発機構) - NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration collaborative mission, with ESA - European Space Agency participation. For the next three years, the objective of the mission is to investigate celestial X-ray objects in the Universe with high-throughput imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy. Also, it will be able to observe the most energetic objects and events in the cosmos, unlocking the mysteries of the evolution of the Universe and the structure of space-time.
XRISM is expected to launch tomorrow August 26, 2023 on a JAXA H-IIA rocket.
The launch will be broadcast live in Japanese and English on https://lnkd.in/dFaQJqBa

The Russian lunar lander Luna-25 "ceased to exist" after a failed orbital adjustment by crashing into the Moon, the Roscosmos space agency said.

Why is lunar landing so difficult?!
With this question in mind, we would like to invite you to visit the touring exhibition "Life in Space", where Russian objects crucial to the space race are also on display. 🔎bit.ly/3QN6t2e

In 2015, the European Space Agency and its Russian counterpart Roscosmos joined forces for a series of missions (Luna-25, Luna-26 and Luna-27) meant to verify the conditions needed to create a permanent human settlement on the moon, a dream abruptly interrupted in the 1970s. The latest geopolitical tensions triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine prompted Esa to announce on 13 April 2022 the end of cooperation for the lunar and Mars-bound ExoMars missions. The decision was also backed up by a request to the Russians to return the PilotD navigation camera, which was due to leave with the Luna-25 mission. This break in relations resulted, on the one hand, in Europe relying on Nasa's Artemis programme and, on the other hand, in Russia continuing its space race alone. After nearly half a century, Russia is trying to return to the Moon with an unmanned lander: on Friday 11 August at 01:10, the Soyuz 2.1b rocket with the Luna-25 lunar probe on board was launched from the launch pad at Site 1S of the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia.
For the first time in modern Russian history, an automated station entered lunar orbit on 16 August at 12:03 Moscow time, with the aim of attempting the first lunar landing on 21 August 2023. The probe will descend close to the lunar South Pole in order to build a human base. That is because it is always possible to observe the Earth from the South Pole, and then it is also an area particularly rich in ice.
If the Moon landing is successful, Luna-25 will remain active on the lunar sounding for about a year to conduct tests and experiments. Specifically, the eight scientific instruments on board will be in action, and will be used to study the lunar regolith as well as the dust and plasma that compose the exosphere of our satellite. Roscosmos' two main goals are: 1) to test its technologies and instruments in view of future missions 2) to take and analyse soil and ice samples from the lunar south pole. Roscosmos

We are pleased to announce that this year we have renewed our agreement with ESA, for granting patronage to the touring exhibition "Life in Space".
The tangible support from ESA is a source of great satisfaction and motivation for us.
It clearly underlines the importance of our project in terms of scientific, educational, cultural, social and territorial outreach through exhibits and interactive installations with a single theme: SPACE.
This topic will allow us to follow a model of social inclusion of people, and offer several activities, uniting nations to break down the Space/Earth dichotomy.
We would like to thank ESA for the support and trust they have shown and continue to show towards Hereleb and all our projects over the last 3 years. 🚀🛰🛸 ESA - European Space Agency Agenzia Spaziale Italiana

Everyone's hunting for Perseids (= meteoric swarm that the Earth passes through during the summer period as it travels its orbit around the Sun, in short "shooting stars").
The peak will be reached overnight today and tomorrow (12 and 13 August) when between 40 and 60 meteors per hour can be seen. The best time to spot them will be from 10 p.m. (CET time) onwards, best by looking north-east.
The area of the sky where they are most likely to be spotted, called the "radiant", is located in the constellation Perseus (to find it, look for the more famous constellation Cassiopeia, with its "W" shape: Perseus is the nearest constellation, bottom left), from which the swarm of shooting stars takes its name.
Those who are not so familiar with the celestial vault can get help from various Apps, which show the constellations of the night sky, from Stellarium to Google Sky Map and many others.
The Perseids, or shooting stars, are also known as "Saint Lawrence's tears": legend has it that Lawrence, who was martyred and burnt to death on a gridiron on 10th August 258 A.D., shed tears during his torture, which would from then on perpetually wander the sky, returning to Earth every year on 10th August. 🔭💫✨🌠🌃
