Celebrating Swahili-Speaking Communities & Their Vibrant Culture….
Swahili, a beautiful Bantu language enriched by Portuguese, Indian, and Arabic influences, is more than just words; it’s a rich cultural tapestry that unites millions across the globe!
Why Celebrate Kiswahili?
Spoken by over 250 million people, Swahili is the lingua franca of East and Southern Africa.
An official language of the East African Community and a working language of the African Union.
Rooted in a deep cultural heritage, from the graceful Kirumbizi dance of the Bajuni to the vibrant chakacha dance of the Digo community.
The Swahili people, from the East African coast to Zanzibar and the Comoros Islands, have preserved a legacy of music, literature, and tradition. Instruments like the gambusi, nzumari, and piano accordion create enchanting rhythms, while the melodic Swahili language narrates stories of resilience, faith, and unity.
Swahili culture also boasts a rich literary tradition and is deeply intertwined with Arabic influencing art, customs, and daily life.
By embracing Kiswahili, we honour not just a language but the diversity, traditions, and unity of millions worldwide.
Let’s celebrate this legacy together and keep the spirit of Swahili alive for generations to come!

SJA World Kiswahili Day Glittering Gala Evening!
....as it was July 6th 2024...
WHY celebrate Kiswahili on July 7TH?
The significance of July 7th traces back to 1954 when the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU), led by Julius Nyerere, declared Swahili as a pivotal tool in the fight for independence. This historic declaration marked a crucial moment in the recognition of Swahili as a unifying language for the people of Tanganyika, now Tanzania, after its union with Zanzibar in 1964.
World Kiswahili Day is a significant event celebrating the global Swahili-speaking community, which comprises around 250 million people. Here's a brief overview of the celebrations from 2022 to 2024:
• 2022: The inaugural World Kiswahili Day in London was launched at the prestigious River Room of the House of Lords, thanks to the hospitality of the Lord Speaker.
• 2023: The event was held at the iconic Westminster Central Hall, marking another successful celebration.
• 2024: A Glittering Gala SJA Swahili Evening took place at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square, adding a touch of elegance to the festivities.
