‘Autumn sun’ - my fourth dried flower mobile for the farOpen group autumn exhibition. For this one I used copper coloured wire and a peach hanging ribbon to help emphasise the golden tones and theme of autumn sunlight 🍂🌞

The show is on for only a few more days so do pop along to see all the beautiful work by our local artists 😊
At the George Newnham GL14 1BS until Saturday 18 October, open 10:30-4pm

A third flower mobile made for the farOpen autumn exhibit. I decided to name each mobile (for the wall labels) and this one became ‘Forest and garden’ for the bracken from the forest, the flowers from the garden and the hydrangeas that are from a garden that feels very much a part of the forest that surrounds it 💚

The autumn show is open now at the George Newnham GL14 1BS until 18 October, 10:30-4pm (closed Sundays & Mondays)

Five flower fairies, each dressed up in a skirt full of flowers and her own special hat 🌸

I’m getting a bit faster at making them as I learn what works and what doesn’t. I still have loads of poppy pods so perhaps there will be even more fairies 🧚‍♂️

Wishing you a lovely weekend 🌞

Cosy autumnal colours for a grey morning 🍂

Today’s dull weather isn’t going to keep me inside though - I’ve a long list of garden jobs to work through (but I might put off the mowing for a few more days 🙄). What are you up to this late September weekend?

This cute little strawflower hoop is still available in my shop, if you fancy brightening up your wall 🧡 Link to my shop below

After some trial and error, this is my dried flower poppy seed-head fairy, inspired by Mandy Voigt (on instagram - link below) who used fresh flowers to make her delightful poppy fairy 🧚‍♂️🌸

I found the dried flowers slipped quite a bit against the poppy stem so I added a few wraps of waxy florists paper tape to the poppy for some grip before attaching the flowers. I’m so pleased with how the flowery boho style skirt turned out 💕Flowers in the skirt include amaranth (love lies bleeding), helichrysum cassianum, hares tail grass, statice, bracken and orach 🌸 Finishing with a hydrangea hat of course! It was a sweet little project and I especially loved adding the floral embellishments ☺️

I’m planning to make a few of these flower fairies to bring along to the farOpen fall show at the George in October so look out for them there!

Ranunculus are one of those flowers you think will never dry well until you try it. They end up with all those beautiful crepe-papery layers of petals and the dry stems are strong. The colours deepen with drying and are just as lovely as they are fresh.

I grow all my ranunculus in crates, planting them around December or January so I’m drying them in mid to late spring when temperatures in my drying room are (hopefully) a bit warmer and I dry them hanging upside down.

So far I’ve tried pastello, salmone, rosa chiaro (pink), giallo (yellow), bianco sfumato (white with pink edge) and a couple of white and magenta ones that were mixed in with my orders. Pastello could be my favourite and I might need to grow it again in the future. Next spring I’ll be growing Purple Jean (thanks for the recommendation !) and Rosa. Do you dry ranunculus? Which are your favourite colours for drying?

Beautiful, seasonal flowers grown in Gloucestershire

One of the things I love most about flowers is how they often bring excitement and expectation along with the changing of the seasons. I’m certain this feeling is a result of having spent the first twenty-odd years of my life in a part of America where the seasons differed dramatically from one to the next. My harbingers of spring were always the crocuses, peeking through the snow and reassuring me that winter would soon be over. I can also remember exploring the woods in springtime for the native Mayapple plant which meant the school holidays were right around the corner. And then there was summer, which was baking hot and humid to boot, yet it was plentiful and delicious, giving us sugary sweet corn, juicy blackberries, colourful zinnias and sunflowers, and fields of nodding Queen-Ann’s-Lace.

Flowers that grow with the seasons are flowers that are kinder to the environment, and looking after nature is as important to me as growing gorgeous flowers. I started Harebell & Bee because I wanted to bring a little floral beauty into the lives of others through sustainably-grown flowers. Even though my gardens might not produce flowers all year long, the flowers that do bloom there are all the more special for the few weeks or months that we get to enjoy them.

I’m Shanna, the flower grower, floral designer, wildlife cheerleader and business owner at Harebell & Bee. I grow a variety of flowers to harvest from April through October in my own garden near the centre of Lydney in Gloucestershire, by the beautiful Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. I love straight-from-the-garden bouquets and enjoy creating natural-looking arrangements using both fresh and dried flowers, as well as experimenting with foraged natural materials I find in the wilder areas of my garden.
