Exciting initiative at the 2022 UK Oncology Forum!

This year the Oncology forum are proud to showcase the inaugural session highlighting Rapid Diagnostic Services (RDS) for patients with non-site specific symptoms (NSS). Patients with NSS (such as weight loss, fatigue or pain) generally do not fit standard two week rule (2WW) referral criteria and often bounce around systems and take longer to get diagnosed and treated.
Rapid Diagnostic Clinics (RDCs) provide a NSS 2WW referral route. These are being expanded across the Country with the aim of providing personalised, coordinated diagnostics to facilitate earlier cancer diagnosis and fast-track care. As well as reducing geographic differences in access to diagnostics.

session aims to bring primary care, diagnosticians, oncologists, radiologists and nurse practitioners together to share experiences in the development of the RDS and combine thinking on future developments and innovation.
Potential themes include:
1. RDS overview
RDC referral processes, filter function tests, pathway, alignment with cancer waiting times.
Clinical outcomes (present SEL RDC paper) with a focus on elderly, medically complex patients and mental health.
2. The RDS/re-direct
The vision - one referral, fluidity of care and improved patient journey. Process of re-directing patients between NSS and site specific (SS) pathways.
Options of front and back end redirects from other pathways
Present SEL data on volume of re-referrals from SS 2WW pathways and evaluation of the SEL lower GI back end pathway
Different models - ? involve greater Manchester team where they use the upfront re-directs. Ernie Marshall on the AOS focused RDC model
3. Sustainability and service expansion
Overcoming health inequalities, NHSE typologies, workforce, financial effectiveness of the service
4. Innovation
Research opportunities, development, clinical trials
