🌾In our second year of trials we were lucky to have the perfect conditions yesterday for drilling the same trial of 10 different specialist wheat grains that were harvested in August from our first year of trials, under the expert guidance of Andrew Willinson @the.grain.doctor and our farm manager Tim Hassell.
Last year we drilled 3-4kg of each grain in one strip, which harvested about 30-40kg of grain after the worst year of conditions for farming. Yesterday we drilled approximately 30kg in 4 strips and we hope to get a good multiple of that (ideally 1/2 a ton).
It will take 3 years to grow enough volume to drill one field of approximately 2 hectares of crop which is millable.
We are trialing grains with a higher nutritional value and learning which ones thrive here at Madresfield. This last harvest the Einkorn was a standout; let’s see what happens with the weather for the next harvest 🙏🌾

🍎We are celebrating a bumper crop of apples this year, especially the two varieties that were originally bred here: Madresfield Court and William Crump. It has also been a good harvest of Pippins, May Queen, Blenheim cross and Pittmaster Pineapple, all of which which will be pressed for juice to serve in our restaurant @madresfieldbutchersandgrill
We are grateful to the gardening team and Ed and Ben from the restaurant for harvesting 750kg of apples which will make approximately 480L of juice, and @clivesfruitfarm1 for pressing. We can’t wait to share it with our customers.

The stews that supply the water for the moat have not been dredged in living memory. They were created in 1120 at the same time as the moat and stocked with fish for the kitchen in the medieval house. There were carp, perch, eels and ancient clams used to purify the water.
In recent years the quality of the water has deteriorated; it was thick with blanket weed, a toxic blue algae and increasingly stinky. The channel along the centre was originally about 1.8m deep but was clogged with silt.
Thanks to Chris and Gary Prosser and some of the home team, we hope to restore the two stews back to good health.
We will tackle the moat next year and try to prevent the blanket weed and American pond weed from getting out of control but we’re not sure how to go about this. Any top tips on the most environmentally friendly way to achieve this would be very welcome.
