Hi everyone,

Time to move on... The Motown & Northern nights have been steadily improving, thanks to your continued support and enthusiasm. As a result, I believe it's the perfect time for me to make my return to the members club gigs. I have complete confidence in Dave Crowther, who you may remember from our last gig where he skilfully handled the entire event, while I focused on the microphone work and mingling, which I love to do!

While I'll be stepping back from the Northern nights, I want to assure you that I'm not going far. I'll still be around, popping in every once in a while to catch up and enjoy the music with you. Additionally, please remember that I'm just a message away via the members' route if you ever need to reach out for any reason.

Thank you for your continued support, and I'm looking forward to many more memorable gigs and performances in the future. Your presence makes all the difference, and I can't wait to share more incredible music experiences with you.

The Dancing Queen & Saturday Night Fever Myth

You may have heard that Abba's iconic hit "Dancing Queen" and other disco tracks like "Saturday Night Fever" were staples of UK nightclubs in the mid to late 1970s. However, this is far from the truth. Despite media coverage suggesting otherwise, Abba records were not played in nightclubs in the UK at the time, neither was Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing” or Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music” - and US disco music was RARELY heard.

In fact, UK club-goers viewed disco music as overly commercial and lacking the authenticity of other genres like funk, soul, and reggae. These styles had a raw and gritty sound that resonated with the UK's underground club scene, while disco music was seen as too polished and slick.

The lack of interest in disco music in UK nightclubs in the late 1970s can be attributed to a combination of cultural differences and musical tastes, as well as the saturation of poor-quality disco music from the US. While some tracks from "Saturday Night Fever" and other hyped disco music did receive radio airplay in the UK, they were nowhere near as popular as they were across the pond.

In short, the myth of the Dancing Queen and Saturday Night Fever ruling the UK nightclub scene is just that - a myth. UK club-goers were drawn to the raw and authentic sounds of funk, soul, and reggae, which continue to influence the country's music scene to this day.

So, what was played in 76-79? Here’s just a FEW, funk and soul floor filler artists from that time...

The Crusaders, Fatback Band , Third World, Commodores , Isley Brothers, Temptations, Earth Wind And Fire, Stargard, Rose Royce, Kool And The Gang, Ohio Players, Evelyn King, Rufus And Chaka Khan, Tom Browne, The Jacksons, War, Brass Construction, Al Green, James Brown, Cameo, Parliament, Dazz, Montana Sextet, John Handy, Roy Ayres, George Benson, Steel Pulse, The Jones's.

Pop Up Parties host club-style events for music enthusiasts in various venues such as nightclubs, golf clubs, upmarket bars, and country mansions. The events feature resident and guest DJs and are open to anyone over 18, although they cater mostly to those 30 and up.
