So this is me Caroline, the girl with curly hair behind Countryside Flowers!

Not only do I grow a lot of the flowers we use, I also bunch them up to sell in local farm shops, at Farmers Markets & arrange them for all occasions especially Weddings.
Sometimes I have extra help unloading the van but mostly you will see me on my hands and knees on the floor, up a ladder creating hanging installations or moving things 100 times until they’re in the right position!

My workshop where I create most of my flowers is an old chicken shed which my husband lovingly did up for me a few years ago, it’s been used as a tractor shed over the years and it was the place you could find my dad in on a Saturday afternoon listening to the football and having a beer!

What’s your favourite flower?
Here’s a few of mine…
I love delphiniums with their tall spikes they add height to the garden and big arrangements where bigger statement flowers are needed.
Larkspur is from the same family and comes in some pretty shades of pink, lilac and white, also perfect for drying right now!
Helichrysum (also known as strawflower) has made a huge comeback in the last few years, I actually really like it now having once ignored it as the typical dried flower.
Cornflower ‘blackball’ is just different with its deep crimson colour and adds a bit of depth to arrangements.
Yellow roses are another favourite, along with these gorgeous frilly ranunculus we grew earlier this year.
Gyp ‘covent garden ‘ is pretty in bud vases at the moment and lastly Veronica, a staple perennial that shows up in June every year without fail.

After a busy week and a beautiful wedding yesterday, we’re back in Colchester tomorrow morning, outside the Mercury Theatre 9.30-2pm for the Farmers’ Market. We have some of our lovely flowers freshly cut for you, along with some seasonal plants, all we need is for the sun to shine, no rain and the wind to go away!

See you all in the morning

So this is me Caroline, the face behind Countryside Flowers, a business I started 5 years ago after a long time growing vegetables on our family smallholding.
Having trained as a florist over 30 years ago I’ve always created flowers for weddings, funerals and every occasion in between but always as a sideline until my daughter came along, then it was time for a massive rethink!
I started off small, growing a few stems of flowers in the first year to sell alongside the veggies at local farmers markets which soon turned into a few more the next year and now this year I’m planning on growing thousands and thousands of stems.
Day to day it’s just me in my wellies, sowing, digging, planting, weeding, barrowing compost, staking, cutting and arranging the flowers.
I love my job and feel very lucky to live where I do, it’s hard work and definitely not all pretty and wonderful playing with flowers but it’s a way of life that my parents instilled in us having seen them work on this land for 50 years.
It would be a dream to pass this on to the next generation but we’ll have to see, all I know is that British grown flowers are here for you all to enjoy, you just need to support us little growers and buy local!

I hope you’re all celebrating Valentines today with the people you love, I’m treating myself to the leftover flowers in one of my favourite jugs ( & hoping my husband cooks dinner tonight!)
Whoever you’re spending this ❤️ day with, be kind and spread a little love, enjoy!
