Happy new year everyone! I’ve been slowly easing myself back into flower farming after a little festive hiatus. I’ve been doing a lot of planning behind the scenes, as well as doing lots of lovely DIY wedding enquiries.

Back when I was growing flowers on my allotment in my early 20s I would never have anticipated how many people’s weddings I’d be involved in, in the future! It still blows my mind to this day when I get emails from people enquiring - so thank you!

I’ve been watering the overwintered potted crops, which include my ranunculus. I used to grow half in the ground and half in pots but I’ve been loosing more and more of my ground crop every year. So I made the leap to leaving them all in pots overwinter. I’ll still plant in waves to try and get successions but don’t think I’ll go back to growing in the ground over winter again.

The biggest lesson I’ve learnt since growing flowers commercially is you have to do what’s right for where you grow. On my plot we have a lot of wildlife, which I love, but it does mean we’re more exposed to crops being eaten. Saying that, the diversity of wildlife means that we tend not to have as many diseases or infestations that can damage crop, as the food chain does it’s thing.

I’m full of that end of season bitter/sweet feeling but, deary me, I’m excited for the slightly slower pace of winter.

This year has been exhausting but one our best yet. The field has supplied beautiful, eco-friendly flowers to so many people and I couldn’t be prouder.

I almost want to say “it’s time to start focusing on 2024” but that’s already been going on for the last few months 😅

Over the next month we’ll be pulling the last of the annual beds out, cover cropping, lifting/dividing perennials and sorting corms and bulbs! Fingers crossed I actually remember to take pictures and bring you along with me 🤞🏼
