Winter wonderful colour amongst the grey days, although the sun did come out for a bit today itā€™s still a bit grim. For the first time this year I was actually woken up by light seeping in round the window, Iā€™m so looking forward to brighter days šŸ™Œ

We have been starting a new compost bay and I wanted to keep it looking very natural, we have a lot of branches and left over green waste to deal with over winter which we love to compost but why not make your compost bay like this? Your will need some sturdy posts, these were Ā£1 each but you could easily use some hefty branches of hazel or similar, they need to be knocked into the ground every foot but with each alternate post they need to be either side of an invisible central line; so you could weave the branches in and out of them. These eucalyptus are perfect for this as still flexible enough. Continue to stack each branch on top of another to create a strong fence. We will use this on three sides of a compost bay and keep adding to them but you can also do this twice over around a foot between each row and you can ā€˜fillā€™ the middle of the dead hedge with other clippings trimmings etc. the wildlife loves it and it continues to break down so itā€™s a perfect solution to needing a barrier which also serves as a compost area. We find this kind of thing particularly useful for the wiggly branches that the shredder hates but will take a lot longer to break down than the other compost material! Iā€™ll try to post a reel on this to explain further šŸŒ±

Happy New Year! Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas and are having a positive start to 2025. We gave ourselves a break and headed to sunnier climbs while the garden has a long deserved sleep. Christmas was spent just our little family on the beach with the sun ā˜€ļø on our backs. Itā€™s been a bit of a shock coming back to the šŸ„¶ chilly weather but we have been out collecting cones to dry in front of the fire ready for next yearā€™s wreaths. I just love the cracking sound as they open up on the warm floor in front of the log burner. The tree is down now and the cottage living room is once again bare, we have a lot of snow up here again and Iā€™m just hoping that the dahlias Iā€™ve stored are not frozen as itā€™s -6 out there!

Some beautiful wreaths made on our workshop, hope everyone is getting ready for the festivities.
