Yesterday, was not easy.

Creating a menu to celebrate the life of a loved one lost is always hard.

For us, but most of all for family and friends who are left behind.

There’s nothing you can say to take away the pain.

Not a cake you can make that will ease the heart break.

When I was asked by the Lemon family to cater for the celebration of life gathering following the funeral service of their beloved son, Harlan I was honoured, touched and also sad.

But most of all, determined to do them proud.

It was a day full of smiles, and sharing memories and you could feel the love in the room for a very special young man.

I think it also made all of us go home and tell those we love how much they mean to us.

Thank you so much Terry and Jak for trusting Rhubarb to be part of such an important day.

I’m sure everyone that knew Harlan will continue to hold his memory dear and that he will never be forgotten.

You know when a situation gets too complicated, I check out.

Life’s too short to try and make sense of others, work out intentions or second guess an outcome.

My advice for those who find themselves with a predicament?

Check out and go and watch a sunset or sunrise.

And then the really important stuff becomes clear.

In the spirit of supporting local (albeit a different local!), here are some beautiful photos courtesy of Seascape Cafe - NSO

This amazing Observatory can be found near Skegness. Not only does it serve as a coastal watch, there’s also a fab cafe and working in it, the most fantastic team.

Helpful, welcoming and smiley.

We need to continue to support our coastal towns. When you pop in and buy a coffee, or eat a magnificent breakfast (this place serves vegans well too 3) please remember to thank those that work so hard to keep it going.

We all too quickly take our local treasures for granted, and in doing so we risk losing them.

A special thank you to Claire (hope I’ve spelt your name correctly) who was so super helpful to us when we visited and to all of the team who served so many guests!

The other thing worth saying is that the beach here is spotless. It’s lovely to see beaches with shells and not loads of washed up plastic.

Here’s to many more years of this wonderful place ♥️♥️♥️

Much delayed post to celebrate the lovely John for his birthday. Plenty of hot food to fill bellies after a walk accompanied by a little bit of what you fancy at The Royal Oak.

Here’s our lovely Davey.

Smiley (mostly). He can be prone to slight grumpiness but he does get up VERY early and travel a LONG way to serve us in sunny Wirksworth.

I know Dave quite well now as he supplies all of our meat for our events (and we only get the best compliments because we know where it’s from) and he’s always helpful, refuses meat if he doesn’t feel it’s good enough and he can work a meat slicer like nothing you’ve ever seen 👀

One thing I want to know is. What would he look like without that beard and would he look like a fairly tall young college student? 🤔

OK so forget the swipe.

It’s bloody annoying all this resizing of graphics on canva!

And you’re probably scrolling and there’s no singing cats or dogs and so what’s the point in reading?

Here’s the why. I’ll keep it brief (no I won’t) 🙄

Well, if you’re a small business owner, it’s tough. No one can prepare you for ALL the tasks you have to do. You’re juggling a million things and I can honestly say we have had in the space of a year only ONE, yes ONE booking with no dietary requirements, menu changes, lifestyle diet requests and of course very serious allergies to work around.

This is hard on so many levels and it’s serious stuff, especially when you’re juggling all the balls and trying to do normal family stuff.

So posting about one of our fave local suppliers IS important.

Why? Because we know where the food has come from?

Why? Because it tastes better

Why? Because if you book with Rhubarb, you also support Winster.

AND, they are the most helpful, friendly, smiley, happy bunch of people.

Long post. Needed to be said.

Not food related. Sorry, not sorry.

These two ♥️

Oscar being offered a well deserved place at Derby College to study Business (despite endless lectures of him not being good enough to succeed in education) and Will finding out he’s got a place in the team to go to Sweden next year and play for his club at the Gothia Cup.

They’ve both overcome many hurdles and the journey has not been easy, but their dedication to keep pushing on makes me realise how strong they are and how far they’ve come.

Boys, your Dad and I couldn’t be more proud.

You have the whole world ahead of you and we’ll be here to stand by your side when you need it, fight for you when you’re tired, and lend an ear to listen when things get a bit much.

Keep going 😉
