The Matrin Peirce Lecture - 14/11/23.

Martin Peirce is one of the loveliest magicians you could meet. His humour and magical presentations poke lots of fun (and a few dad jokes) but never to the detriment of his audience. Even performing to a group of magicians, he interacts, always allowing them to lead the comedy moments.

What impresses me most about Martin’s routines is the simplicity and strength, giving any performer the freedom to play and entertain. I can see why his marketed effects sell so well, and, having bought several myself, I’m a definite fan.

Martin’s lecture had easy to learn card routines each with multiple punches, very commercial and entertaining mentalism routines, gambling games, a dream style prediction (so adaptable to theming), and a 10 minute murder mystery that will only cost you a couple of pounds to make, this routine is the ultimate in packs small and plays big.

With any show it’s always great to leave your audience wanting more, Martin’s pocket book test about lottery winners did just that. This is a new 2024 release from Martin with Alakazam Magic. We all predict that this is going to be a huge hit and a multiple sellout. I think all our members are still scratching their heads at “how?” along with a few swear words I won’t mention 😂.

David Copperfield is going to make the moon disappear in Feb 2024. It will be great to see him doing what he does best and I personally can't wait. However.... us children's magicians have been doing this particular illusion for years 😂

On Tuesday 12th September - 8pm - Chris North will be presenting his new show "Cabaret Mystique". Chris is kindly donating his time to the society to raise much needed funds for the future of the society. It will be a fabulous evening and you will get to see the show first before it heads to the theatres and cabaret venues. This show is open to the public, so there will be limited seating for members and guests. For non members and the general public tickets will be available on the door.

Sam aka Mr Sam the Magic Man, presented an absolutely fabulous lecture for the A.M.S. last night.

I have to say that Sam is probably the most creative thinker in children’s and family magic that I know. It’s fascinating to see how Sam’s ideas develop, working them in during his professional shows and tweaking them until they play perfectly with an audience.

Last night we had, full working magic comedy routines, with great looking and fun props, clever utility devices for magical and comical happenings and plenty of advice when building your own props. Sam had something for everyone one, and kept nothing back, showing us in detail how all the devices and props work. There was no padding in Sam’s lecture, it’s quite amazing and awe inspiring the amount of new material he creates.

At the end of the lecture Sam had a few if his creations for sale and video lecture notes. The video lecture notes are great value and a great resource, a brilliant and well produced visual reminder with performance details for the props and routines.

Sam is not only a creative bloke, he’s also a very talented entertainer, so the night was full of laughter and plenty of banter amongst old and new friends.

Thanks Sam for a really fun and inspiring evening 😃🙏.

We have been a little bit busy lately on tour with our show Top Secret - The Magic of Science but also working on a little project that we are very proud to be part off for the last 2 years!

It’s always a blast when Sam comes to lecture for us, and he is back! This man has done more or less everything in magic and that is why he is such a creative fellow. I’ve been lucky to visit his workshop and studio and there are always new props and gags he is working on, not only does he perform and work in the material he also manufactures it and sells it around the world.

Hot off his highly praised lecture for the Blackpool Magicians Convention, Sam joins us for a night of fun family magic, comedy and performance experience that is worth its weight in gold. So come along for a great night of magic and many laughs, you won’t be disappointed!

16th May 2023 - AMS - 5 minutes please.

A lot of laughter and fun magic to see last night at the AMS. It was “5 minutes please”, 5 minutes of anything, performance, chat, stories or tap dancing 😉. If you wanted to take part you just placed your name in the hat. With lots of friends in, everyone was up for taking part.

There were many highlights during the evening, from all the friendly banter to some real magician fooling moments. To mention a few, Graham and Tony had some lovely mentalism routines with unique presentations, Graham had an automated card shuffling machine combined with a magicians hotline phone call reveal, and Tony had an effect where an audience member becomes the magician and literally does a trick on themselves. One of the effects that Graham had created, with German to English translation cards, was fantastic.

Jake, demonstrated some comedy bits of business with a 3 way change bag, and had a really fun idea to pass on adapted from a happy accident during one of his stage shows.

Sam, the mad inventor of our group, showed us a project of his that is evolving really nicely, all I will say is comedy spring raccoon meets die box dilemma 😂.

Steve Majes (me), I love the old magic books and showed some pe*******on effects that I had rediscovered with rope and a silk looped streamer. Through the wrist, through the hand and through the neck with no extra gimmicks. I also showed my excitement and results from 3D printing my first multi section dye tube.

Sean, what a smooth performer. He guides you in with a warm welcome and before you know it he is predicting your every move, he brushes it off as coincidence, and then knocks you straight between the eyes with a double whammy of watch and diary prediction. I’ve always admired Sean’s coin work and later, as an encore, did his lovely version of a 3 fly style routine, brilliant!

Our own in house legend Ned, did a very knowledgeable talk about practical effects when doing table magic and presented an effect you don’t often see “The zig zag deck of cards”. Ned really needs to write a book or do a podcast about his experiences ❤️.

Jeff, that one word always brings a smile of anticipation. Jeff along with his creative thinking is just a naturally funny man. He showed us a great balloon display idea, a few simple and sometimes forgotten, but still magical, card tricks. Along with a mind reading routine that had Steve Sausage creasing up in laughter, you had to be there!

5 Minutes Please!

A night of magic with “5 minutes please!” What’s this all about? Well, you can take to the stage (floor area) for 5 minutes and perform magic, lecture about magic, do your own dealer dem, ask opinions, ask advice or even boil an egg if you like 😉. It’s your 5 minutes to do with what you like 😂.

On the night those that wish to take part will put their names in to a hat, as names are drawn out you get up and do your thing. You are more than welcome to put your name in twice if you like 😮. We will run the event until we run out of time or run out of names, whichever comes first.

As this is a social event members and visitors are more than welcome to bring along magical items that you wish to sell. Those magic drawers won’t empty themselves 🤣.

This is one of our first in house social nights, please take the time to support these events as they are a keystone for the societies survival, they are also a lot of fun 😁.

An Evening with Harry Robson - The Anglian Magic Society - 18th April 2023.

I have to say this was the most entertaining evenings we have had at the society. I haven’t laughed out loud at a magician's performance, and been amazed at the same time for a long long while.

Harry delivered a superb evening of magical entertainment and laughter, along with advice and tricks that were pure gold. Highlights were definitely the many stories of the famous interactions Harry has had, and the comical outs he has used to turn things to his advantage, in what would usually be a difficult situation. His live demonstration of making a brainwave deck “The fastest brainwave deck in the west” along with his key system was brilliant. The Chinese snapper story was hilarious 😂. And, Yesterdays Dream was very magical and really amazed me 😮.

Harry’s no nonsense honesty about the magic business and the social media storms he has been connected with, was very interesting to hear. This honesty and his feelings about this just made you admire him more.

Such a fascinating, magical and fun evening of entertainment, from a true working legend of magic.

Just brilliant!

An Evening With Harry Robson - Magic and Conversation with the legendary Harry Robson.

We are delighted to welcome back the amazing Harry Robson to the Anglian Magic Society. It has been a few years since Harry’s last visit and on that previous occasion it was a much talked about and revered lecture, with many of our members taking on Harry’s advice and using his lectured material in their own sets.
This time we have a more laid back event with “An Evening With Harry Robson”. There will be tricks, advice and many stories along the way. Harry has performed for many high powered companies and famous clients, his material is direct and very strong. All this road testing and working solidly is why Harry’s magic is used by magicians all over the world.

Come along for the fantastic magic, and a fascinating night of conversation!

REVIEW - Chris Frostie Frost - The Anglian Magic Society - Tuesday 21st March 2023.

It was great to meet Chris in real life, previously I had only seen him on the various social media platforms. When you meet Chris you instantly feel the passion and energy he has for delivering that feeling of real magic. As soon as he starts talking about ideas for magic and presentations you can see all the lights shine bright behind his eyes, becoming a projector, beaming those imaginations into being. With a few like-minded thinkers, in this audience of magicians, you could almost feel the crackle of imaginative sparks in the air.

Chris paced through a great variety of material, all created for a family audience. It was strong and could easily be tweaked to play to young, old or a mixture of both.

Chris had an entertaining book test with a Wizard of Oz theme. There were some lovely ideas here, it was easy to perform, leaving plenty of thinking room for your presentation. His working on the classic colouring book, bringing the effect out of the “I’ve seen that before” and into a magical routine with a prediction twist, was a great update. There was also a very cost effective magical “build a teddy bear routine”. A Pom Pom stick routine, with pace and a nice build to a finale and Chris showed us how he combined old children’s effects, that didn’t quite work on their own, into a bright and comical combined mash up that really works.

As well as the magic there were great tips on heightening your character and comedy performances with mime and physical exaggerations. And, an audience participation routine with great comedy interactions and byplay using simple props.

Chris finished his lecture with tips on being creative and how to exercise that imagination muscle, along with a preview of a couple of ideas that were “in the works”. And the finale, was a presentation of his comedy ventriloquist routine that was a fun and very entertaining finish to the evening.

Chris delivered a very entertaining, insightful and inspiring lecture. Definitely a magician to keep your eye on 😃.

Frostie Imagination Station - The Lecture.

Frostie’s shows are a mixture of madcap magic, silly songs and ventriloquism. Along with being the resident entertainer for Hamleys Toy Shop’s VIP events, his ludicrous and eccentric shows can be seen at cabaret venues and theatres across Europe and the UK.

In March we get the chance to tap in to Frostie’s imagination as he lectures for the Anglian Magic Society. With routines for kids and older audiences this lecture will have something to inspire everyone.

"The Lee Hathaway Lecture"
The Man Who Fooled Penn & Teller! And M.I.M.C Gold Star.

To celebrate and promote the forthcoming release of his new book 'Happy Busy Magician: A Close-up Worker's Guide to Upping Your Game' - Lee is taking time out of his performing schedule to visit and lecture for us at The Anglian Magic Society. Lee particularly enjoys lecturing, as it is a chance to share ideas and spend time with the people he considers friends and colleagues in magic.

The lecture includes several of Lee's original ideas, ranging from a higher technical level down to self-working and also includes a breakdown of his 'A-list' working set, explaining why he does what he does, the thinking behind it and how to enhance and maximise the magic you do. Lee’s aim is that everyone goes away with something new or fun to try out or ways in which to improve what they currently do.

As there is currently no subscription fee required for membership to the society, the door fee for this lecture event is £5.00 to Members & Guests.
