Now that the dust has settled on the Reggae Revival Vinyl Cup Clash 2023, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and shout out the people who made it happen. Firstly, huge thanks to Dennis the promoter, for inviting me “to cause an upset”. I did that for you. Huge respect to my fellow DJs: Driver, Judge Slipper and Kemist, who threw down some deep tunes and put up an almighty fight! It was very close. I definitely learned a lot from you all. Finally, to all the people who came and cheered me on, you won it for me. Feeling grateful for this opportunity & excited for what’s to come.

Flits between joyful, upbeat folk, wistful melodies, intense vocal acrobatics, funny everyday observations and serious messages. Joni blazed a trail and her decision to leave makes it all the more essential for me to dig out her classic records on a Sunday.

In 2016, I invented zombie life drawing*

*probably!

On October 29 The Drawing Dead is coming back from the dead…

2014–2016, as my events business was growing, I was working casually as a life model. The group sessions were designed for serious artistic study and there was a hushed, studious atmosphere. Meanwhile I was overseeing the events at Spanky Van D***s where we took the opposite approach, trying to make as much noise as possible! I wanted to bring these two worlds together.

I was sat on a train with a notebook open and came up with the initial sketch. I’ve always been intrigued by zombie movies and video games and spent a lot of pocket money on arcade ‘House of the Dead’ as a kid.

Will came up with the branding and design concept. I especially like the rotting hand you can see on his poster.

Hannah creates the storylines, maps out the artistic exercises and gives structure to the events. Sometimes in a bio-suit or a judge’s wig, she leads the audience through a tutored life drawing session, giving them as much or as little help as they need to enjoy creating something they can take away with them.

Lucy is our special fx expert, and each show, she converts someone into a scary, life-like zombie. It takes half a day in makeup, but she creates a worryingly realistic zombie every time.

We’ve taken the show on tour, selling out venues in Liverpool, Loughborough and Leicester. All the Ls. We took over the National Justice Museum where we put ‘zombies on trial’ in a historic courtroom. LeftLion Magazine Nottingham said:

“thoroughly enjoyable. Not only was it immersive and hilarious, but we actually learned something about life drawing.”

We’re very grateful to all the super-keen, enthusiastic Notts folk who snap up the tickets, come draw zombies, and share their work. If you’re intrigued, and read this far down, thank you!

Summer is flying by so fast!

This was taken at the very start of it, as Bar Operations Mgr for Detonate , followed by DJ sets at El Dorado Festival and Nottingham Riverside Festival, also new residencies at The Hockley Arts Club and Sporting Social.
