Why are we sometimes drawn to smaller, intriguing features rather than the big sweeping views and showier attractions? Here are a few tiny favourites:

Tiny theatre: Once a Methodist Chapel, the Playhouse, which is tucked away down a side street off Pateley Bridge’s main road, is a ‘blink and you miss it’ building. Don’t expect a neon sign or bright lights, simply a green door between two stone colonnades with a sign above. That simple entrance is deceptive though, with the ‘in the round’ style of theatre capable of seating over 70 people and a front row where you’re so close you’re virtually part of the cast.

Tiny gallery: Visit Settle and you can see The Gallery on the Green, believed to be the smallest public art gallery in the world, housed in a red phone box. Not only that but it’s open 24/7 and filled to capacity at least twice a day! Thanks to the ingenuity of community group Cultivating Settle, the phone box gallery has earned widespread acclaim, staging exhibitions such as a display of prints by renowned calligrapher Seb Lester for his ‘Tiny’ exhibition; an embroidery collection and the famous all-knitted 12 days of Christmas.

Tiny place of worship: The ‘Wuthering Heights’ Lunds Church in one of the remotest spots of Wensleydale gets our vote. A forlorn stone building with slate roof and arched windows, the church is now redundant as a place of worship and sits in a field in High Abbotside at the head of Wensleydale near Garsdale Head.

Small museum: The Craven Museum and Gallery in Skipton Town Hall isn't so tiny but it's still small and last year beat many other cultural titans to be shortlisted for the Art Fund Museum of the Year award. On display are a precious set of Shakespeare’s First Folios (originally discovered in a cupboard beneath a sink in the museum); items dating back to prehistoric and Roman times and a depiction of Victorian life in Skipton. Outside is another interesting display in a telephone box!

Tiny cafe: A little shout out for a lovely café just outside Grassington. The Hedgerow, Threshfield is tucked away in a log cabin behind a gift and florist’s shop. Step into the cabin and you instantly get swept up in the Scandinavian hygge vibe. The coffee and cake are pretty good too.

Our Story

The Hedgerow, established in 1993, is based in the beautiful Dales village of Threshfield. The shop showcases beautiful and luxurious flowers which are delivered daily from Holland. Alongside the flowers you can enjoy a cup of speciality coffee in the coffee shop which is featured in The ‘Northern Independent Coffee Guide.’ Also The Hedgerow stocks wonderful gifts which are sourced from all over the world, from local artisans to ethnically sourced companies.

After getting her first taste of floristry at 16 working as a Saturday girl in a tiny florist in Wakefield, Wendy founded The Hedgerow in 1993. Since then The Hedgerow has developed into more than just a florist with a coffee shop and a flower school. In 2014 Wendy’s daughter Heather joined as partner after completing a degree at The University of The Arts London.

With a wonderful team of nine The Hedgerow work hard to provide you with the best flowers around ensuring that every bouquet is considered unique and thought about down to the very last detail.

NEW AT THE HEDGEROW....Nigel Hutchinson has opened a plant centre at The Hedgerow, opening up the garden behind the shop he is now selling plants perfect for gardens in The Yorkshire Dales. Nigel started his career at Oxford Botanics over 30 years ago and has since owned a plant nursery on the tops of Keighley and taught horticulture at Shipley collage and Harlow Carr.
