I’ve been busy making Christmas decorations and wreaths to take along to three Christmas fairs this week. I’d love you to join me!

I had a bit of a panic attack when I found a whole load of these creatures munching away at an oak tree in the paddock. All is well, it’s not an oak processionary moth but a rather benign Buff-Tip Moth (Phalera bucephala).

These caterpillars are a common native species to the U.K. They can grow up to 50 cm in length and can be seen on deciduous trees from July to October. Whilst they may all be munching on the leaves, they don’t adversely affect the host so I’ll just leave them to it.

When the caterpillars are fully grown, they hide in the soil to pupate before emerging in May to July the following year.

The adults are fantastic at camouflage (they look rather like a twig) but I’m determined to keep an eye out for these next summer although I might have to camp out as they’re nocturnal, rather like me posting at this ridiculously late hour….

September’s here and the colour palette in the field is subtly changing.

It’s probably more by good luck than good management in this first growing season but spending time studying the changes and understanding what works together makes me so excited for this time next year.
