👀 Time for a little audience participation!
How many senses do you have?
Drop your answer below, then read on to see if you were right...

5️⃣ Did you say 5? You are right... well...kind of!
In school we are often taught we have 5 main senses, but did you know we actually have 8!

Understanding our senses can transform how we experience and connect with ourselves, others and the world around us.

👂🏼 From sight and sound to interoception, which helps us tune into our internal signals, each sense plays a vital role in our lives, and each and every one of you reading this post will have a unique sensory experience based on how 'strong' each sense is.

👀 For example, I am a super visual person, I call it the autism eyes, so if you are ever looking for a lost item, or a spot the difference, I am your gal, but give me a blank page to write on and I will FREEZE because there are no details or visual clues to guide me!

If you would like to know more about how to understand and embrace your senses, get in touch today to book a complimentary 1-1 call.
My lived experience as an autistic/ADHD person means I really do get it, I live it!

Keep an eye on our page for a video breakdown of the 8 senses.

Let's talk about the after-school eruption—those big explosions of emotion and energy that children often face after a day at school or a big event.

Many children, especially those on the autism spectrum, find it challenging to regulate their emotions throughout the school day. They may hold in their feelings until they get to a safe place, leading to meltdowns or hyperactive behaviour at home.

💙 How to Help Your Child Regulate
Lowering demands within the first hour after school can be incredibly beneficial. Here are some tips:
🍎Snacks and Drinks: Have snacks and drinks ready to help stabilise mood and energy levels.
📖Delay Homework: Allow time to decompress before starting homework.
💬Gentle Questions: Ask about their day without pressuring them to respond.
⛺️Create a Decompression Space: Provide a quiet, comfortable area for them to unwind.

Remember, every family is unique. These tips are a starting point. Focus on what works best for you and your child, and create a supportive and understanding environment.

🌟 Inclusion 101: How to Help Your Family Stay Regulated During the School Holidays 🌟

Today, we're diving into tips for helping autistic individuals navigate the school holidays:

Tip #1: Use a Visual Calendar. Create a visual schedule to reduce anxiety and provide structure.

Tip #2: Give Yourself a Break. Include days at home to rest and recover, preventing burnout.

Tip #3: Plan for the Unexpected. Prepare for questions by familiarising yourself with the journey, destination, and menus in advance. Bring emergency essentials and sensory tools.

Tip #4: Do What Works for You. Focus on what works best for your family, bringing comfort items and following routines without worrying about others.

Tip #5: Communicate Clearly. Check in with your kids and communicate openly, allowing for flexibility in plans.

The holidays are about creating special memories. Incorporate these tips for a smoother, more enjoyable experience. Merry Christmas! 🎅🏼🎄

🌟 Embracing Neurodivergence: My Journey 🌟

Hi, I'm Katie! Running my business, Unite Club, allows me to meet different families around the North East of England, an opportunity I find very exciting.

Diagnosed during the pandemic, I faced delays and a lot of uncertainty. When I finally received my diagnosis, it felt validating yet incomplete, I realised that while diagnoses can provide clarity, they often come without comprehensive support or guidance. This gap led me to start The Unite Club, aiming to support others on their journey.

Receiving my diagnosis highlighted the need for better understanding and support systems. For me, sensory challenges were significant, and the lack of tailored strategies was frustrating. Over time, I sought additional help, including an OT diagnosis, which provided further insights into my struggles.

It’s crucial to focus not only on challenges but also on strengths. Each person, especially children, has unique qualities alongside their difficulties. Acknowledging these positives can make tough days more manageable and foster a more supportive environment for everyone involved.

I hope to raise awareness about the importance of personalised support post-diagnosis and the need for a more balanced view that celebrates both strengths and challenges.
