The Management of Artificial Intelligence: AI and the Future of Organisation

A very Happy New Year! We’re very much looking forward to welcoming Professor Philip Garnett, Professor of Systems and Organisation & Society at the University of York to our January 2025 Café.

Philip says – increasingly we are seeing AI being deployed within organisations with a view to increasing the efficiency of certain tasks, or in some cases, replacing the role of people within those organisations. One interesting aspect of this is the type of tasks that AI is being used for, as these are in some cases becoming more 'managerial'. With AI's being involved in decision making processes or evaluation. This raises interesting questions around how AI might be used for the 'management' of people, and conversely, how might we manage AI in organisations in the future. This talk will explore some of these issues through the lens of AI evaluation of people in management contexts.

About our speaker – Philip Garnett is a Professor of Systems and Organisation at York’s School for Business and Society, and the ‘Society and Ethics’ Pillar Lead at York’s Institute for Safe Autonomy. His research focuses on modelling organisational processes, structures and interactions with their environment, particularly how humans and emerging technologies collaborate in decision-making, and the impact of this collaboration on organisational dynamics. He has expertise in applying complex-systems theory and network analysis to understand organisations and the influence of machine learning and AI on their decision-making.

You can make your (£6 suggested) contribution in ARC using the basket which is passed around in the interval. If you'd prefer to pay on-line the details are available at the event

Our website contains a list of all the talks we have held since we were set up in January 2004 and the talks for this season. Find out more at www.cafesci-stockton.org.uk

P.S. Please note that the answer to the following questions …

Scotland?
What about Scotland?
What have you got against Scotland?
Why don’t you ever come to Scotland?
Are you worried you’ll get a nosebleed if you go north of the border?

… is that we toured Scotland in 2024 and this year’s tour mainly consists of UK locations where we have yet to perform together.
