***official statement***
The past weeks have been the most challenging in our history at The Rigger. On the 7th of December, Storm Darragh caused severe damage and destruction to the back part of our building. The high winds tore off the felt and timber battens of our flat roof causing extensive destruction and leading to significant damage to the roof, timber, electrics, and the cellar cooling system. Water ingress damaged the staff only areas of the venue & the residential accommodation above the venue. Thankfully, the stage and venue part of the building remain undamaged and structurally and electrically safe. Most importantly, aside from a few cuts and bruises no one was seriously hurt (including our two dogs, who were safely evacuated and are completely unharmed).
Despite these setbacks, and thanks to the heroic efforts of the fire services, our incredible team, the artists, promoters and tour management we overcame the odds to safely host the much-anticipated Tony Wright (from Terrorvision) gig that very night. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience of our grassroots music community.
We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the emergency fire services, who closed off the street and worked tirelessly for hours in challenging conditions to secure the area and ensure public safety.
Unfortunately, the challenges didn’t stop there. Inacurate media reports led to widespread confusion, causing gig cancellations and ticket refund requests - all due to misconceptions that the entire venue was closed or unsafe. These setbacks have added significant financial strain during an already difficult time.
We’ve been working tirelessly to address the damage. While the venue remains completely safe and open, essential external and internal repairs to the back and residential areas of the building won’t be completed until January 2025 at the earliest. While insurance will cover most of the major repair costs, many associated expenses are not covered, leaving us with significant financial challenges. Despite this, we remain determined to keep the music alive and continue providing a space for live performances and community events. We would love to see you over the festive period and beyond.
To everyone who has reached out with offers of support, donations, and fundraising ideas - thank you. We've been overwhelmed by your generosity and kindness. You have been a beacon of hope for us during these tough and uncertain times.
As we face mounting costs from repair work, associated expenses, and the financial impact of inacurate reports, we’re preparing to launch a Crowdfunder. Every penny raised will go toward essential repairs and operational costs to ensure the venue can stay open and we can remain a vital space for live music, performances, and community events. If we exceed our essential spend, the surplus will be donated to the Music Venue Trust (who have been offering us endless support to ensure The Rigger remains open during this difficult and challenging time) to help support other venues in need. Their guidance and assistance have been invaluable as we work to get back on track by February 2025.
Thank you for standing with us. Together, we can weather this storm and ensure The Rigger continues to thrive for years to come.
