As a teenager, Zakia Sewell became entranced by English folk music, initially through Pentangle’s haunting rendition of the traditional song, The Cuckoo. But with this enchantment came a tension - a question - of whether such a song could ever belong to her. Being of Caribbean and British descent, Zakia is sensitive to the darker histories that connect these two places and yet is drawn to a vision of Albion - an ancient, mythical land evoked in so many folk songs, symbols and stories. Zakia considers enduring symbols of Albion - from Stonehenge to the union flag - asking whether a refreshed perspective on our nation’s past might pave the way for a more hopeful future. Zakia Sewell Finding Albion in conversation with Saturday May 4.

Author and academic AnneBella Pollen talks about Kibbo Kift, an organisation who on the surface seemed just an all-ages alternative to the Scouts, but in reality had a vision for a revivalist-futurist Utopia. Their wide-ranging practices included pacifism and propaganda, myth and magic, education and economics, but their ambitious philosophy can be seen most clearly in their mystical and modernist art and design. Pollen’s new book ‘The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift: Intellectual Barbarians’ showcases over 100 largely unseen examples of the group’s creative output including decorated tents, campaign banners, illuminated manuscripts, protest graphics, carved totems and ceremonial attire.

Subculture festival, Sat Mar 25. Miki Berenyi of talks to Samira Ahmed about Fingers Crossed, her uncomfortably frank, characteristically wry and frequently deeply moving memoir. We know we just said the Fat White Family book is the best rock book in years, but honestly this one probably pips it.

Subculture, Stroud, Sun Mar 26th. In 1986 the NME released a cassette that would shape music for years to come. Now, thirty-five years on, Nige Tassell tracks down the class of C86, unearthing members of all twenty-two bands and sharing the stories, both tragic and uplifting, of these long-lost musicians.
