For the upcoming Lea Morris/Lisa Doscher show next Friday the cake raffle will be in aid of the Prospect Hospice. What decent rock’n’roll show would be without a cake raffle? It’s a little known fact that on the Clash’s White Riot tour in 1977, Joe Strummer would often knock up a Victoria sponge and raffle it off before they went on stage.

Our final show of the year will be on Friday 20th September and will feature, all the way from the USA, the soul/folk singer Lea Morris. She is often compared to Tracy Champman and Joni Mitchell but her use of warm vocals, looped harmonies and vocal percussion all lead to a unique style.
She was born in Washington D.C. and her dad was in the funk band Black Heat but she started singing in the church then taught herself to play guitar and write songs. She has shared a stage with Mavis Staples, Odetta and Bobby McFerrin. Her Baulking performance will be sharing the stage with former guest Lisa Doscher.

Just how good was that Topette show last Sunday?
But we can’t sit around and dwell on that as we have the last of the mini mid summer series of shows featuring the guitar virtuoso Richard Durrant on Saturday 20th July.
I’m sure most of you will know what Richard does as this will be his fifth visit to Baulking but if you don’t he is one of the finest acoustic guitar players you will ever hear. He has performed worldwide and played sessions for nearly all the BBC radio stations with his interpretations of J.S. Bach’s works receiving critical acclaim.

Mike Heaney will be giving a talk based on his new book The Ancient English Morris Dance on Wed 12th June at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington starting at 7.45pm - all you Spires and Boden and Topette! fans come and have a listen to the origins of so many of the tunes they play.

Doesn’t seem like it was a week ago that Wesley Stace played a great show in Baulking. A big thanks to him and all who came along to see him.
So we rapidly move on to Sunday June 16th and the visit of the wonderful Topette! If you still don’t know what they are about here they are giving a polka a good seeing to!

As we mentioned previously our guest on May 18th, Wesley Stace, is a long time collaborator with Bruce Springsteen. As Mr Springsteen is in the UK at the moment, he did ask to play Baulking but I wasn't prepared to take the risk, it seemed like a good time to share this podcast of just how Wesley got to meet Bruce and how they have worked together.

It’s always a good day when Richard Durrant turns up at Baulking and it has been too long. So on Saturday July 20th we are going to put it right.
If you don’t know Richard he is one of the finest acoustic guitar, and every other stringed instrument you can pluck, players in the country. Many of you will have seen him at the church before but if you didn’t know his work have a listen to him on the link below.

Richard is about to release a recording he made one spring evening at Knepp, in Sussex whilst standing in a circle of five nightingales.
These beautiful birds began to sing as Richard played Bach on his ukulele.

This astounding recording goes live on Spotify on May 1st at 5.34am - the time of the Mayday sunrise in Sussex.

We have had a stroke of good fortune at Cow Muck Towers.
Ace singer/songwriter Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding) is coming to Baulking on Saturday 18th May. Under the name J.W.H he has recorded a string of fine records and worked with the likes of Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen and Iggy Pop. His songs have been recorded by Rosanne Cash, Graham Parker and the hero that is Wreckless Eric.
Here he is duetting with Bruce Springsteen.

A big thanks, as always, to all of you who came along a week ago to see the two Johns/Jons. A fine time was had by all and they both loved it.
The next show will be on Sunday June 16th at the church in Baulking and will feature the multi talented 5 piece band, Topette! They are a lively crew with a set list full of jigs, reels and any other dance you can think of. It will be a great night and it will sell out!
