Introducing our guest post from the fabulous, colourful Boom Bridal ❤️

As a member of the LGBTQ community, I have experienced the wedding industry from both perspectives.

I married my wonderful wife a couple of years after same-sex marriage became legal. During my dress fitting, I was asked "who the lucky man was", and our engraved cake-cutting set that we had ordered came back with Mr & Mrs as the supplier thought it was a typo. Many instances made us feel uncomfortable and frustrated when we attended wedding fairs and approached suppliers. Fast forward a few years, I decided to launch my own business as a felt florist. I wanted my company, Boom Bridal, to be a welcoming, inclusive environment for all individuals to celebrate their love so no one had to suffer the things that we did. As I re-entered the wedding industry, it's safe to say that there has been significant progress since 2015, but there are still areas that could use improvement.

I have created a non-judgmental zone for my couples, and I am your biggest supporter when it comes to your wedding. If it's important to you, it's important to me. I have included small details on my website, such as my pronouns and pronoun boxes on my inquiry form, and I use non-binary terms like "the happy couple" and "love birds" when interacting with couples. When it comes to you and your wedding, you deserve suppliers who are supportive and make you feel at ease. My advice for any couple planning their 'best day ever' is to approach suppliers how feels best to you, there is no right or wrong way to introduce yourself or talk about your wedding. If you want to be addressed by certain pronouns, say this upon introduction and don’t be afraid to correct suppliers if they get a detail about you or your partner wrong, it's important to correct people so they can adjust their language. If a supplier is not comfortable with this, they aren't the supplier for you. Research any potential suppliers, look at their previous work and see if this aligns with what you're looking for. But most importantly, just be your fabulous self, and and follow what you're naturally drawn to. Colourful wishes, Laura

Gone are the days where we just talk about "bride" or "groom" when talking in general terms to anyone getting married, as not everyone identifies as either on their wedding day.
"If suppliers consistently refer to 'bride and groom', or 'the bride', 'the groom' or 'Mr and Mrs' it means that le***an and gay couples aren't visible and could suggest a lack of acceptance" - taken from the All In Love LGBTQ+ Educational Starter Pack for Wedding Suppliers by Lisa Vine - LGBT+ Advocacy, Consultancy, Training.

I always love hearing neautral terms for on their wedding day, and learn new terms all the time!

My most recent learnt term is a fox party, a gender neutral term for the equivalent of a stag or hen party, where everyone is invited! And who wouldn't love that!?

What Does LGBTQ+ Inclusivity Mean and Why Does It Matter?

LGBTQ+ inclusivity means that individuals and couples feel welcome, safe and able to be themselves, free from prejudice & discrimination. It also means that they will be and are respected & recognised for who they are.
It mattwrs because historically & atill to this day, LGBTQ+ individuals and couples are fighting hard to be seen, heard and accepted for who they are. For some, although not all LGBTQ+ people, weddings are a symbol of that fight for recognition & acceptance and therefore, inclusivity is paramount.
It also matters because a wedding is meant to be the happiest day of a persons life and therefore feeling accepted for who you are, recognised for who you are, and accepted for who you are will contribute to these feelings of joy and happiness.

🏳️‍🌈IF YOU'RE NEW HERE......🏳️‍🌈
I thought I'd give you an insight into the fair and why it's been brought into existence........
I, (Robyn, a wedding hairstylist and LGBTQ+ ally), I wanted to use my passion and skills for weddings to create something positive for the community and the wedding industry as a whole, after learning how difficult it can be for people from the LGBTQ+ community to find safe suppliers. 100% of those who answered a questionnaire I sent out to lots of LGBTQ+ married and engaged couples, said that they either wouldn't go to a "conventional" (for want of a better word) wedding fair as they would feel too nervous and uncomfortable or those that had gone said they felt underrepresented, uncomfortable, awkward, stared at and like suppliers didn't know how to speak to them as an LGBTQ+ couple.

There are a few aims for the fair. The first very important aim is to create a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community to come and plan their weddings, free of judgement, assumptions, and discrimination. A place for people in love to come and get excited about wedding planning and find some amazing suppliers who will celebrate that love with them! 🎉
Another big aim is to help educate suppliers and promote inclusivity. A lot of suppliers want to be more inclusive but are unsure how to or nervous to do or say anything that will offend people, so end up doing nothing. I myself have learnt alot through this journey of organising the first event and will continue to do so, there's always something to learn, and I really want to help other suppliers too so collectively we can make an impact on this very heteronormative industry. Each supplier exhibiting is given an educational starter pack for LGBTQ+ inclusivity in the wedding industry created by the fabulous , an LGBT+ advocate, trainer and consultant in LGBT+ inclusion.

The Elm Tree - Hundleby is a beautiful Georgian building and English country garden nestled on the outskirts of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

An intimate and exclusive venue with a choice of indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces making it the perfect boutique wedding venue.

An award-winning venue with its own in-house wedding and events coordinator who works exclusively for the venue, so you are never planning your perfect day alone.

The Elm Tree was rescued and renovated by owners Jonathan and Chris in October 2014 just weeks before their own wedding! Never the ones to shy away from hard work, they lovingly renovated The Elm Tree to its current glory. Opening The Elm Tree as a five-star, award-winning Bed and Breakfast, they soon discovered an opening in the market for a boutique and intimate wedding venue. Jumping with both feet into this new adventure has paid off and they have been recognised as one of the finest venues in Lincolnshire.

When they are not working their socks off, they are enjoying time with the pugs Ernie and Edith with trips to Norfolk and embracing the sea air.

Niki joined the team in 2022 as The Elm Trees weddings and event coordinator and has not looked back since. Having a background in theatre she left London to embark on family life and found a passion for wedding planning that led her to The Elm Tree.

When she is not planning weddings, you will find her with her family running around after her 3 boys and her cocker spaniel Rosie.

As a team we feel that weddings are for everyone. We choose to be as inclusive of everyone's hopes, dreams, wishes and choices. We are as open and as personal with our couples as we can be... we do our very best to remain professional but essentially we just end up making friends and having a lovely time.
