G is for… Gladiolus

Coming in a gorgeous array of colours, gladiolus are a fabulous summer flower that adds height and drama to floral designs—if you can time their blooms just right!

Did you know…

- The name Gladiolus comes from the Latin word gladius, meaning sword. This is why they’re sometimes called sword lilies.
- Native species from Britain and the Mediterranean were once used for medicinal purposes, both topically and internally. However, modern gladiolus are considered inedible.
- Snapping off the top few buds from a stem encourages the lower flowers to open fully, reaching right to the tip!

November is here, yet my dahlias are still going strong! Thanks to the (so far) mild autumn, I’ve been lucky enough to have these beauties blooming in the garden a little longer. I’m soaking up their color while I can!

I *think* dahlias might be in my top three flowers - they come in so many colors, shapes, and sizes that they’re hard to beat. How about you? Are dahlias in your top five? Top ten? Let me know your number in the comments!
