We’re pleased to reveal that we have been welcoming a very special guest to the A.W. Lymn business over recent weeks…

BBC presenter Stacey Dooley has been filming across our business with her team for a new documentary commissioned by BBC Factual, to uncover what goes on behind the scenes at a funeral directors.

The ground-breaking programme, called Stacey Dooley: Inside the Undertakers, sees Stacey spend around a week immersed in our family business facing her fear of death head on. She got involved in our day-to-day work to discover more about what we do – from arranging funerals to making coffins, learning more about embalming to carving elaborate headstones.

Stacey said: “Death is a topic that’s openly discussed in many other cultures, even celebrated in some instances, yet I am so awkwardly British about the whole thing.

“It is, of course, inevitable, and that’s why I wanted to really explore exactly what happens when we do die.

“This access allows us to ponder the bigger questions surrounding life, as well as witness the practical logistics of a funeral. I’d like to thank every family member who has allowed us to document their story. I’m so grateful.”

Funeral directors are there to support you with the logistics of the event, the care of your loved one, transportation and paperwork. They know exactly what needs to happen and when and can give you the freedom to be present and fully engaged.

Funeral directors can give as much or as little help as you require and a good FD really is worth their weight in gold in making a difficult event so much less stressful. ❤️🤝

From booking the church or crem (or other venue) to coordinating with the celebrant or clergy, florists, and cemeteries, they handle all the logistical details with finesse. 📋✨

Navigating the sea of paperwork involved in a funeral is no small feat. Funeral directors ensure all documents are in order, and organised in the right order. Taking this headache away from you. 📝🗂️

Caring for your dead is at the heart of what an FD does. With utmost care and professionalism, they oversee the washing and dressing of your dead person. A good FD should also allow or even encourage you to help with this, if that's something you would like. 👩‍⚕️💄

Financial Guidance: Funeral directors are there to guide you through the costs and financial aspects of a funeral, helping you make informed decisions. 💰🤑

Funeral Ceremonies: Whether it's a religious service, a celebration of life, or something entirely unique, they'll ensure the ceremony runs smoothly, allowing you to focus on your dead person and your emotions. A good FD should allow you the scope to make this as personal as possible by offering different venue choices, alternative vehicles etc 🕊️🎈

Community - We know lots of wonderful FDs whose support doesn't end with the service or who give additional value to their communities through education and outreach. We heart this approach. 🌻📞

Friends are the family you choose for yourself ❤️

The death of a close friend can be just as painful as that of a close relative. But others around you might not always recognise this.

Friends can be a vital source of support, practical or emotional. They might have been someone you relied on to relax or have a laugh with. Losing that connection can hurt very much 💜

It can also be very painful if you were friends for a long time, perhaps since childhood; you may also feel a loss of connection with the past.

Starting a discussion about death is very difficult but also very important!
You would be amazed how many couples don't discuss it and don't know what their partner wants after death!
These lovely containers are scatter tubes! You can take the cremated remains of your loved one to the location of their choice!
Cremation is not for everyone! However, there are also smaller ones available, if your family is spread out then you could arrange a time and day for you all to scatter the cremated remains at the same time of day and feel more connected in grief. Never be afraid to ask questions about death! ❤️

I am so pleased that I joined the Association of Independent celebrants. When my arrival pack came it was really reassuring to have an ID card for visiting people in their homes and to be given information leaflets to give to my clients. I am also listed on the web site so that clients can check my details before a visit if they would like to feel reassured.💖

At the AOIC we provide a wealth of continuing professional development (CPD) recourses for our members. CPD for celebrants is so important.
