ā¤ļøLest we forget ā¤ļø

This handsome young man pictured post-war in 1922, is my great grandfather - Henry Herbert Hope ( known to all simply as ā€œHarryā€). He proudly stands behind his wife Winifred, and their daughter Joan (my grandma).

Harry served in the Great War being taken away as a young man to the front line serving his country in France. Working with the war horses looking after them in the battlefields. Heā€™d started life as a gamekeeper and lived in the family farm cottages surrounding the estate where he grew up with knowledge and understanding of country life, looking after horses and gamekeeping.

Harry, unlike so many othersā€¦survived. He was badly injured during service and was brought back for a serious operation, removing one of his kidneys. Where in recovery he met his soon to be wife Winifred, my great grandmother at Tunbridge Wells infirnary.

Harry dedicated the rest of his life in a career as a head gardener for large country houses looking after the house gardens the vegetable produce and large estates. Harry lived to a ripe old age into his 90s - where I very much remember him as a child. Even with grandads shaky hands (severe shakes from Parkinsonā€™s that he suffered) his rows of seedlings always remained POKER straight! And the carrot tops would pop up in a row that could have been drawn with a ruler!

For many many years Grandad was proud to be the standard bearer for the British Legion for remembrance services on this day, to honour and remember those that were lost.

Today, we remember them all.

And just like that. Autumn has come, the cosy Cardiā€™s are out and everyoneā€™s back at school/college/uni ā€¦and literally overnight it seems here in Beds, UK - the sun has disappeared šŸ˜³šŸ„²

But trying not to be sad, Iā€™m looking forward to the next run of weddings, a fabulous wedding fair (more news to come of that) and exciting new course developments. šŸ™Œ

And whatā€™s not to celebrate with these gorgeous Autumnal colours, the explosion of grasses, dahlia, cosmos continuesā€¦and weā€™re a long way from that first frostā€¦.so the pickings from the flower farms are still absolutely glorious, at their peak šŸ™ŒšŸ™Œā¤ļøā¤ļø

In fact, thereā€™s always something more akin to the ā€˜New Startā€™ for me in Septemberā€¦more so than in Spring for me. I think itā€™s because I think of myself foremost as ā€˜mumā€™ - 19 years of the ā€˜back to schoolā€™ chaos, school runs, mum cabs and after school clubs. Over the years that has meant the juggle of working around dance class, swimming lessons, gymnastics and rock climbing (amongst others!! I think there was a small spate of ā€˜trampoliningā€™ from my eldestā€¦.but we donā€™t talk about that!šŸ˜œ)

Feeling reflective this week and a tad emotional about my amazing girls who have grown into incredible, independent, brave young women. Facing their fears this week and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to achieve what they want in life - moving on to bigger things as they both face their big new challenges this September.

So back to it!!! Iā€™m back into the studio with renewed confidence and energy (I just might need a little hug occasionally if you see me! šŸ¤ŖšŸ„°)

Funeral flowers donā€™t always have to follow ā€˜conventionā€™, and they certainly donā€™t have to be in oasis/floral foam. A simple low sided wicker basket casket topper, full to the brim with beautiful British flowers that can all be taken home by individual members of the family, afterwards, to enjoy.

Isnā€™t that a nicer way to say goodbye? šŸ’ššŸŒæ

Proud to be part of the directory - a whole network of like-minded florists who are able to create foam free and biodegradable arrangements, all across the UK. Heart warming to know the word is getting out and we are making a positive change. šŸ™ŒšŸ’šā™»ļø

WHAT LIES BENEATHā€¦.. šŸ˜±šŸ˜±

Yep. Itā€™s true. This isnā€™t the most attractive image that has ever appeared on my grid; but itā€™s showing the true ā€˜horrorā€™ of whatā€™s hidden beneath a lot of outwardly ā€˜beautifully aestheticā€™ floral displays.

This is the ā€˜hidden stuffā€™ā€¦the mainstay of the floral industry, and why we have such a shockingly bad track record of sustainability. šŸ˜±šŸ’ššŸŒæ

From top, clockwiseā€¦

1. Leaf ā€˜shineā€™ spray (anyone know whatā€™s actually in this and why we need it? Tell me below)

2. ā€˜Square/roundā€™ tray sits on top of most vases (that water could have gone into, crazy right?)

3. Oasis/floral foam - we all know this stuff by nowā€¦or do we?

4. Plastic wreath wrap - backing for most wreath products to ā€˜protectā€™ your door

5. Poly ribbon - reels and reels in every florist shop. Plastic content. Sometimes wired for good measure.

6. Assorted tapes, fixatives and stemtex - we still use tape to hold items in placeā€¦trying to replace as much as possible.

7. Plastic card sleeves and plastic picks to poke them into gift or funeral arrangements.

8. Cellophane- used to ā€˜aqua packā€™ a huge majority of bouquets, used as sleeves for flower transport.

9. Elastic bands - on just about every wrap of flowers, box of gift boxes ā€¦usually cut off and discarded.

10. Cable ties - used to hold just about every floral installation youā€™ve ever seenā€¦in place. Cut off and discarded.

11. Oasis plastic ā€˜paddleā€™ - used for foam bricks for floral displays on event signage, arbours, staircases etc (combined with cable tie).

12. individually wrapped packages of flower food. Snipped and discarded.

Do you think most people are aware of what lies beneath? Should we be asking more questionsā€¦ like;

ā€˜WHY???!!!ā€™ šŸ˜œšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Thankfully, itā€™s not all doom and gloom. There are alternatives and we can make positive changes ā€¦if we can just get the word out there šŸ˜šŸ™ŒšŸŒø

Please do SHARE and SAVE this post for a quick reference visual reminder, when you need it!
