The weather has been too damp and mild to plant my tulip bulbs. With a cold snap forecast next week, it’s the perfect time to plant. This hopefully đŸ€žwill prevent the bulbs rotting and slow down growth. I’ve gone back to growing in crates. This saves space allowing me to plant more perennials and spring annuals. I use tulips as an annual rather than letting them naturalise. This gives me a longer stem length and I can sell or store them with the bulbs to last longer.

Before I dug up my dahlias I managed to cut a few stems. The quality of the blooms weren’t good enough to sell, but they’ve given a little bit of sunshine to my kitchen during this gloomy weather. I literally plonked them in a vase, so no prizes for arranging.

You may be surprised to hear, that I don’t often have flowers in my house. They either get sold or I just simply run out of energy. This has been a reminder of how much joy flowers can bring. 😊

This week’s frost has brought an end to this year’s cut flower season. There will be plenty of things to come for Christmas and I am continuing to make farewell flowers. If you are planning a life event in 2025 and would like to discuss flower options, my diary is open.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my small local business, it really does mean a lot. It has been a very tough year with the weather and slugs and has needed a lot of resilience. It’s now time to slow down and rest.

Sweet peas 2 đŸŒ±

Sweet peas like deep pots for their root growth. I use a pot that is 10cm deep. This year I’m trying out some root trainers which someone gave have to me. Fill your pots with a peat free multi purpose compost mixed with perlite and I add a bit of builders sand. I’ve pre watered my compost.

Add 3 seeds per pot or 1 to each root trainer. There is no need to water them in. That’s it! I will leave them in my greenhouse until April. Check if they need watering, but taking care not to over water, I leave them slightly on the dry side. I will make sure my greenhouse is well vented over the winter, even giving my plants a blast in the sun on warmer days. Sweet-peas can stand temperatures as low as -4C, but I will cover with fleece or use a sheet on days where we have consistently low temperatures. Yes, they are divas and a plant/flower that takes a lot of my time as a cut flower. But, they are the flower that fills my garden with the most amazing scent and colour, and creates endless conversations with my customers about their beauty and past memories.

Mice love sweet pea seeds. Even though I don’t have a huge mice problem, it’s best to take precautions. I create a shelf with an overhang which makes it difficult for mice to climb up. At night at add covers for extra protection both from mice and the cold whilst they germinate.

Sweet peas đŸŒ±

A lot of people tell me they can’t grow sweet peas, so I thought I’d share how I sow mine. They are a little more hardy than most people think, which is why I sow in the autumn and in the spring. They do need some protection if over wintering, either in a cold greenhouse, a zippy greenhouse or a windowsill in a cool conservatory.

Sweet peas have a hard outer shell, soaking in water for a couple of hours helps to soften the shell and speeds up germination. You can skip this stage, they will just take a little longer to germinate.

I soak each variety in a separate container with a label, the idea being I can plant out in colour blocks and record how each variety performs - it never quite works out like that đŸ€”. Tomorrow, how to sow the seeds and tips on protection from mice.

Thank you to everyone who came along for a chat or pick up a bouquet at Stone Farmers Market. Thank you to Rosie park_lane_flowers for your fabulous dahlias. I even had time to make an autumn wreath. I’ll be back in December with festive wreaths, bouquets and decorations.

A funeral sheaf to celebrate the life of a much loved mum, who loved gardening and colour.

I love to make funeral flowers which reflect the personality of a loved one. My arrangements are plastic free and use my locally grown flowers or British grown. I always encourage families to repurpose the flowers at the wake and to share sounds family and friends.
