I was writing a short piece yesterday when autocorrect turned ‘funeral flowers’ into ‘unreal flowers’ and set me thinking about the truth behind the slip.
Red Roses for Valentine’s day, the insistence on Peonies for November weddings, the soulless cloned arrangement on top of a coffin … they all speak of a disconnect between us and nature: the unawareness of the seasons and the gradual loss of knowledge that was once taken for granted.
It’s so sad that the recipients of these flowers will believe they’re holding the real McCoy: will believe that Roses and Peonies have no scent or that the life of a keen gardener and country-lover should be remembered with white Lilies all the way from Africa.
Make 2025 the year when you explore further afield by looking closer to home.
Go to for local flowers and to for natural funeral arrangements that celebrate the unique life that’s just ended.
