What a Waste!! // Did you know that somewhere between one quarter and one third of all food produced globally is never eaten!! 😧😤🤯 Some of that waste comes in the primary production stages from surplus and products deemed not fit for sale, but a staggering amount of this waste is down to us, consumers and households!

This week is the Love Food Hate Waste campaign, and this year their tag line is 'wasting food feeds climate change'. Quite a statement, isn't it, and I'd hazard a guess that many people haven't thought about it like that before ... have you?

You're not alone if you haven't, it's so easy to mindlessly scrape dinner leftovers into the food bin, throw out the mouldy few slices of bread, and forget something at the back of the fridge until it's past it's use by date. That small action has a much bigger impact on climate change though!

How?
🌍 Getting products from the farm to our kitchens uses valuable resources at every stage - 30% of global greenhouse gases come from food production
🌍 For every bit of food that is wasted, the resources that went into it are wasted too
🌍 It needed land to grow, the demand for which causes deforestation
🌍 It needed water, fertiliser and energy to grow (and remember that out of season growth requires even more of these resources!)
🌍 It needed transporting to you (shopping local helps, but there is often transportation involved in the production process somewhere)

To make things worse, not only has the food and resources been wasted, but if food is sent to landfill then the process of it rotting produces methane, the greenhouse gas we've all heard of which is more damaging than carbon dioxide! 8-10% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions is from rotting food, which is more than aviation!

If you have a home compost bin or are able to send your food waste for composting at your local council then that's a more planet-friendly option, but reducing our waste in the first place is still the better option and one we can all improve on.

Much of the above info and stats have been based on the recent Waitrose & Partners Weekend magazine, which also includes this line that stopped me mid read ... "If we all went without wasting food for just one day, it would have the same positive environmental impact as planting half a million trees, or taking 14,000 cars off the road for a year". ONE DAY! That's insane! So come on, start off with one day, we can all do that! 🙌

What's your best food waste prevention tip? Tell everyone below, and lets all be part of this big, and quite frankly easy, change! Our bank balance will thank us as well as the planet! 🌍💚

(p.s. check back later in the week for wedding food waste tips)

Go Bold // If you search "eco-friendly wedding" on Pinterest a lot of the top pins are very natural, green and earthy, and it's completely understandable why, but what if that just isn't you? What if your everyday life is full of colour and you want your wedding day to reflect that? Can it still be eco-friendly? ... OF COURSE IT CAN!

Being sustainable and achieving an eco-friendly wedding is about the approach you take, not the style you aim for. My wedding planning support services are built around you, helping you to take a sustainable approach to your planning journey. I help soulmates with planning their very own stylish, sustainable wedding that has their personalities written all over it, whether that might be gothic, modern, minimalist, bright, rustic, or anything in between!

You do YOU, lets just make it sustainable in the process shall we?

22.02.2022 // I couldn't let today pass by without mention of this unique date! Not only is it palindromic, but it's an ambigram too, meaning that on a calculator it will also read correctly upside down!

I love dates like this, not least because it makes me think of our own engagement date, 02.02.2020, chosen specifically by Nathan as he has always had a love for number patterns and palindromes (maybe he was always destined to marry a Hannah too! 😉)

What dates are special to you? Do you have dates that have dual meanings - maybe your first date will became your wedding date too, or you have chosen to marry on the same date as your parents or another significant couple in your life?

As humans we love to attach meaning and memories to certain things, and I love that by helping you to create your perfect wedding celebration, together we're making a new significant date for you 💚

p.s. thought I'd share this image I love on a date I love, because, well why not!

Wondering about attending or exhibiting at the Magpie Wedding ECO Wedding Shows this year? The lovely Sian Richardson Photo and Film was one of our exhibitors at the Ethical Wedding Show last Autumn and has shared about her experience here, so pop over for an insightful read from an exhibitors perspective 😄

Having a sustainable wedding is about making good choices, not making sacrifices! Read all about my wonderful day at the ethical wedding show.

Waste not, want not! // What's worse than something having a really high carbon footprint and having used lots of resources in its production?... How about if it was all for nothing and it goes to waste?! 😮

Waste is such a huge issue, food waste being a particularly big one, but waste and single use items in general are so problematic when you stop to think that the resources and carbon footprint has been all for nothing or just one single use! This is far from being a problem specific to the wedding and events industry, but let's face it, we're wasteful too!

This weekend I saved over 30 red roses, leftover from Valentines and reduced in a supermarket, each with a huge out-of-uk-season carbon footprint and simply destined for the bin or in the best case scenario, the compost bin! Swipe to see where they are now, and what they will become (hint: here's some I made earlier) 👉

Reducing the demand and carbon footprint in the first place would be the ideal solution here, but there's something so satisfying about knowing that I will make use of them regardless, they won't go to waste on my watch!

Having shared this on my stories this weekend I've had such a lovely response, so many couples who are going to give this a try too, so thank you 🥰 Remember, it's not just roses that make great confetti... Swipe to the end to see my favourite confetti so far made from the beautiful hellebore ❤️

Conscious Connections // When I set up Green Soul Weddings I knew the wedding industry could be doing better to embrace, talk about, and champion change towards a more planet-friendly future for weddings and events. It was at the core of the business I knew I wanted to develop, but I hadn't come across many others who seemed to be thinking the same thing.

It didn't take long before I found other likeminded souls, many of them in fact, across all aspects of the industry, all keen to see change and all endeavouring to do their bit towards a better future for the industry and the planet.

To my likeminded supplier pals, I say THANK YOU! I feel we've made great steps forward since then, sustainability is definitely talked about so much more now in the industry, and that's down to us! I've found such a supportive community in you all and we've been a force for good, and for that I am so grateful 💚

Next week, on Tuesday 15th February, I am pleased to be helping the Sustainable Wedding Alliance to bring their fabulous conscious connections events to East Anglia for the first time, with a networking morning at Willow Grange Farm . It'll be an opportunity to catch up with familiar faces and meet plenty of new ones too, all with an interest in taking sustainable steps forward for their business. We'll also get to enjoy coffee and cake from VG Coffee too, so what's not to love!

Will I see you there? Book your free space, tell others to book theirs too, and come join us! https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/conscious-connections-east-of-england-tickets-240079884397

Show your love // As we head towards Valentines Day the shops are full of offers and suggested gifts to buy for the special person in your life ... and do you know what, most of it leaves me completely uninspired and feeling less than romantic, does it you too?!

If you're anti-valentines then I completely get it, I often am too, it has become very commercialised and *newsflash* not everyone loves red roses, chocolates and champagne!

However, if like me you are keen to make an effort this year (it's our last one before we get married so it feels more significant than other years ❤), then here are some eco-friendly gift ideas to get you thinking:

- seasonal British blooms, potted plants or dried flowers (or if it has to be the red rose, find an eco-conscious local independent florist who will have carefully chosen the most ethical source for their roses)

- get creative and make a small token of appreciation - bake their favourite cake, cook their favourite meal, handmake a card, personalise a second hand t-shirt or cushion cover, frame or scrapbook your favourite photo of you both

- give your time instead of a gift - caught up in the fast pace of life and feel you don't spend enough time with your love? Carve out time together, on valentines day or at a later pre-arranged date, and switch those phones off for some precious human connection instead

- experiences are worth more than money! Linked to the above idea, plan an experience, plan a trip, plan an activity that will give you memories, not things! It could be extravagant, a luxurious night away perhaps, affordable, like a picnic or treasure hunt around your local park, or completely free, like an evening watching the stars!

- shop with local, independent small businesses for everything from the gift to the card and wrapping paper or fabric wrap!

You've got 8 days left to plan, should you wish to of course, so lets make it more eco conscious this year!

January Vibes // Has a photo ever oozed more cozy, warming, calming January vibes than this?

Today has been renamed 'Brew Monday' by the Samaritans. Instead of 'Blue Monday', they're focusing on the reality that any day can be a blue day, and they are encouraging us to all take a bit more time to share a brew with those we care about. Let's carve out that time in our busy lives to be there, to check in, to talk, to listen, and to allow the space to open up about our feelings.

If it's any aspect of your wedding planning that is causing you stress and concern, reach out and share your concerns with me 💚 My wedding planning support calls are there for us to be able to share a brew (in person or virtually) and replace that stress and concern with professional advice and reassurance! Message me to find out more 💚

I'm so excited to be working on a very special wintery styled shoot with the talented creatives who's work features in this photo very soon! Watch this space 👀

What makes your heart sing? // All week I've been admiring the beautiful frosty mornings we've had here in Cambridgeshire, and yesterday morning, after a busy week staring at my computer screen, I knew I just had to wrap up warm and get out there to enjoy the harsh frost we once again had.

I went on one of my favourite nearby walks, one that's normally a 30 minute brisk walk, but yesterday wasn't 'normal'.

Mother nature had pulled out all the stops, accentuating every tiny detail. I noticed each strand and vein on leaves and seed heads. I noticed the individual leaves making up what would otherwise be indistinguishable leaf litter. I noticed the rays of sun peeking through the trees and reeds. I noticed fungi that would otherwise be camouflaged amongst the undergrowth. I noticed the steam rising from the water as the sun began to share its warmth. I noticed the crunch underfoot and the bird song all around.

What should have been a 30 minute walk was doubled, nearly tripled! A few photos were taken to capture it, but even more moments were taken to just stop and admire. It wasn't about speed, it was about mindfulness, connection, and respect.

Soul replenished. Heart full 💚

If nature makes your heart sing, then let's continue to do all we can, in our daily lives and in our one off celebrations, to protect it, to respect it, and to preserve it. Let's ensure future generations can have their souls replenished by it too 💚

[Image descriptions: a selection of photos taken on my frosty morning walk, showing seed heads, leaves, and general views from my surrounding area all touched and accentuated by frost]

Safe in your arms 🤎 // I just adore this photo, I'm pretty sure I've shared it on here before but when it just radiates tenderness, warmth and love why wouldn't I share it again! 🤎 Sending warm, cosy vibes your way this chilly Friday evening, I hope you too get to feel safe in the arms of the one you love this evening or weekend 🥰

Tonight it's date night for us, which will consist of a nicer meal than our standard weeknight repertoire and maybe half an hour snuggled up on the sofa. It'll be short but sweet, as I've once again got a very early start tomorrow for my part time job 😒🥱

Like I've seen many of you say this year, I haven't set new years resolutions, but I do have a few intentions for the coming year, starting with spending more precious time with my partner and family. Last year I felt many aspects of my life got stuck in a rut, and I felt it take it's toll, but this year I'm determined to ensure it will be different!

There's going to be a few changes over the next few months, mostly behind the scenes ones that won't effect how I show up here but that will hopefully have a big positive (🤞) impact on me. There will be some changes you'll see too though and I look forward to telling you more! I've got so much to look forward to this year, and I'm feeling motivated to make it better, personally as well as for this business I love 🤎

Another intention of mine for this year ... showing up more authentically on here, like I feel I used to but somehow I lost it along the way. I feel my posts haven't had heart, passion and intention recently, and have mostly been icky sales focused ones, for which I can only apologise, I don't like it so I'm sure you don't either! This is SOCIAL media, so I want to embrace the social side again more!

Thanks for sticking with me on this Green Soul Weddings journey! 🥰 x

We're Getting Married THIS YEAR!! // Eek, who else is excited to be able to say this today?! Is 2022 your year?

Whether like us your date was originally set for 2022, or whether this might be your second, third or even fourth attempt at being able to say your I Do's, I hope you're feeling excited today at the prospect of becoming newlyweds this year 💚

The past few years I've often said how quickly time seems to fly, but I have a sneaky suspicion this year is really going to pass by in a flash! As we make some of the remaining decisions and embark on the rest of our own planning journey, I'm determined to savour all of the little moments as well as the big this year!

2022, eek, you're here at last!

However you're celebrating the new year today, have a good one! We're off to see my family today after a great new years eve get together with my fiancé's family yesterday 💚

2021 in Colour // Let's see this weird old year out with a frenzy of colour shall we?!
I feel like a stuck record when I say '2021 has been a strange year' as I am pretty sure we were all muttering the same last year too! Despite the tough parts, there's always good times and positives we can look back on, and 2021 is no different. This year I've:

💚 become a freelance member of the amazing Willow Grange Farm team and assisted many lovely couples to have their smooth running big day

💚 helped loads of likeminded couples find their ideally-matched mindful suppliers by working with Magpie Wedding and Wellington Wood to organise The Ethical Wedding Show

💚 advised, reassured and provided planning support to couples and families via my Green Soul Weddings service options

💚 collaborated with, networked with, and freelanced with so many lovely colleagues who have given their all to this industry over the past 12 months, many of which I'm proud to also call dear friends

💚 been able to donate vital funds to the great work of our chosen charity Wilderness Foundation UK

💚 continued to share about, advocate for and hopefully inspire the movement towards making our industry and your weddings more sustainable and kinder to our beautiful planet and everyone/everything on it!

Next year promises a few changes, a few new opportunities, and more of the same too, and I'm ready to see what it brings my way.

Thank you to YOU for your support, encouragement, and for following along with this little business of mine 💚 Happy New Year, I hope however you're celebrating you too are able to reflect on the good this year gave and feel hopeful for the good yet to come! 🥂

p.s. Sending a huge congrats to this lovely model couple who also had a special announcement this Christmas, enjoy your new year as a family of 4! 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

Why Eco Weddings?

Hi, I’m Hannah, the friendly wedding planner at Green Soul Weddings, it’s lovely to have you here.

You might be wondering who I am, why I am a wedding planner, why I focus on eco-conscious weddings specifically, and what I could do for you. Well, it’d be rude not to answer you, so here goes!

Green Soul Weddings has begun from my love of all things beautiful, creative and well organised. I’ve had many creative hobbies across the years, from cake decorating to photography, scrapbooking to crochet, and I’ve always loved losing myself in a creative atmosphere. I thrive when I get to apply my closest attention to every minute detail, whether that be on a creative or organisational task, and the wonderful world of wedding planning allows me to apply it to both!

After a few career avenues that left me feeling unfulfilled, I discovered that the creative and organisational spark in me just wasn’t being nurtured, and that’s when my training as a wedding planner begun. For over 2 years I have been studying with the Wedding Academy as well as gaining invaluable hands-on training with an experienced planner, and the seeds for Green Soul Weddings have been sown.
