Pippa blew away the audience at last night Canterbury City Slam spoken word and poetry event in the Westgate Towers, which closed off another amazing year at the Canterbury City Show. We can't wait to work with Pippa to keep the community spirit alive until 2025 when we do it all again! ☀️

That’s a wrap! As our poetry slam continues in the Westgate Towers, the Canterbury City Show will soon be over for another year. We’ve had such a lovely weekend celebrating the wonderful community that makes our city so special. We still have some spaces available for the FREE African Drumming workshop on THIS SUNDAY July 21st 11am. It is a £3 booking deposit which is refunded on arrival. The event is taking place as part of the Canterbury City Show and will take place in St George's St.

Spaces are also available for other workshops throughout the summer, all of which will be taking place at Whitefriars, Canterbury (Whitefriars Square) funded by Arts Council England and the Boshier Hinton Foundation.

The Canterbury City Show is proud to announce its first annual poetry slam, the Canterbury City Slam! Join Alex Vellis & Sven Stears as they host Canterbury’s newest poetry slam in the iconic ‘Westgate Towers’, headlined by none other than UK slam champion 2023, Mithago Craze!

Ten slammers will battle it out in single-round combat to become Canterbury’s first ‘Arch Poet’ (and artist in residence at next year's Canterbury City Show).

In typical slam style, all poets will have three minutes to wow five audience judges. The judges will then score the poets out of ten, with the highest and lowest scores knocked off for fairness. Whoever ends up with the highest overall score will be crowned the winner!

This year, all ticket takings (minus the automated admin fee for online booking) will go to the Umbrella Centre in Canterbury, a local mental health social support charity. In the last few years, Canterbury, and Kent in general have lost a tremendous amount of people as victims of su***de, we believe that if we support people, care for each other, and have (those sometimes difficult) conversations, we can all find a little bit more happiness, a little bit more health, and a little bit more hope in our day to day lives.

Tickets will be available as two options £5 and £10 depending on how much people can support. If you want to perform in the slam, for your chance to become Canterbury’s first Arch Poet, contact Alex Vellis or Sven Stears.
