Across the UK, over 300,000 sets of ashes remain unclaimed - including those of a man born in 1868 - leaving funeral homes to shoulder the responsibility of their care.

In many cases, families are either unaware or unable to collect their loved ones' remains.

With much of the UK's funeral legislation still based on Victorian-era laws, the NAFD is advocating for clearer, modernised guidelines to address this growing issue.

Our own Acting President, Darryl Smith and Director of External Affairs, Rachel Bradburne have been engaging with the BBC to shine a light on this urgent matter and drive meaningful change.

As you know our ethos is to buy products including ALL of our coffins that are sustainable and locally made within the UK.
We wanted to share this new innovative product, the world’s first living(?) coffin that enriches nature by biodegrading in just 45 days. The coffin is grown in just 7 days in Delft, The Netherlands, from local mushroom species and upcycled h**p fibers.
Our question, we are excited about this, would you like to see us offering this product? Things to consider :
1. Carbon footprint on travelling all the way from The Netherlands
2. Packaging, though in a cardboard box, potentially some plastic materials

While many people associate end of life doulas with elderly individuals, the truth is that they can support people of all ages including children and young adults. End of life doulas bring a unique approach to addressing the needs of individuals facing end of life, regardless of age.

In cases of younger people, doulas might work closely with parents, caregivers, and medical teams to navigate difficult decisions, provide emotional support, and help create a legacy. They also work with people in an age-appropriate way, offering emotional comfort and tools for processing grief.
The role of an end of life doula isn’t just for those in later life — it’s for anyone who is facing the transition from life to death, no matter their age.
