To highlight what is in season, we've always wanted to showcase our "flower of the month". We'll start off with the most joyful of the blooms, the sunflower. It is at its peak of perfection this month and is a true diva of the flower world.
Not only do sunflowers resemble the sun, their faces also turn to follow the sun. They have their own biological clocks which help them to follow the sun during the day, and then move back to their original position at night. This “sun-chasing” behaviour is called heliotropism, and it’s most active while the flower heads are still growing.
Sunflowers bring joy and positivity, symbolising strength, good fortune, admiration, and
loyalty. They remind us of hope & optimism in difficult times through mythology & culture.
Many artists have depicted Sunflowers and none more famous than Van Gogh. He painted
them in the south of France, on large canvases with sunflowers in a vase, with three shades
of yellow ‘and nothing else’. Painting sunflowers had a special significance for Van Gogh
communicating gratitude.
In the garden, sunflowers are just as generous:
🐝 For pollinators – their wide, pollen-rich faces are like an all-you-can-eat buffet for bees.
🐦⬛ For wildlife – when the petals fade, the seed heads turn into ready-made bird feeders.
🌻 For other plants – their tall, sturdy stems can be trellises for sweet peas, beans, and other
climbers.
This year we're growing a range of colours including peach, cream, multicolour, and red on single and
branching stems.
