Do you love fresh flowers? Sweet peas are sooo easy to grow, right? Well, truth be told it’s a mixed bag of yes and no!
After just 7 days on a warm windowsill in the house, my 2025 sweet peas have germinated. Now they go straight out to the brighter, natural light of the greenhouse before they grow tall and leggy. Super easy, huh? Well…
Sweet peas are so very joyful, but they do need work! They are hardy little plants, so can be planted out in March/April if you’re ready with the frost cloth for a chilly night. As they grow, they need support and will be happy winding their way up a bamboo wigwam, a fence or trellis. And be sure to site them in a sunny spot - not enough warmth and they can sulk.
Every few days, they need to be tied into their support so they don't flop. If you don’t stay on top of this, they quickly get unruly, with tendrils everywhere and shorter, wonky stems. This truly is a constant labour of love.
Sweet peas are hungry and thirsty little blighters! They need a lot of water and at least once a week, a feed with a weak seaweed solution.
Once they start to flower, they are the gift that keeps on giving - the more you cut, the more they give you! At least once a week, I cut every flower, and within a few days, more buds start blooming. What a joy! But forget to do this and they quickly set seed, meaning no more flowers.
So why grow these attention seeking divas? Their scent is like nothing else and their ruffled little petals come in so many colours. If you cut deeper, you can have the wiggly tendrils which I love.
You won’t find sweet peas in florists shops or supermarkets so I hope if you see someone selling them at a village shop, farm shop or farmers market, you appreciate the months of love, work and time they have given so you have a little bit of heaven to enjoy at home.
