A slightly late, but very Happy New Year to everyone! šŸŽŠ

I have been very busy over the past few months, and unfortunately haven't had the time to get many photos for social media, so apologies for the radio silence. That's one of my New Year's Resolutions!

Now, with a month or two of downtime, I will be busy getting things sorted for the year to come.

To everyone, all the best in the new year, and let's keep our fingers crossed for a much better year than the previous two šŸ¤ž

Another night with the Johnston School. This time, it was lit purple on World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day.

This year, the operators of the centre, Kirkcudbright Development Trust, wanted the school lit for a reason close to their hearts, as earlier in the year they sadly lost a friend, and a person who was a great help in making the project a reality, to pancreatic cancer.
Each year, this day hits home too, as I also lost my papa to pancreatic cancer.

There is currently no standard screening test or early detection method for pancreatic cancer, though research is being conducted in these areas.ā€Ø Despite having shockingly low survival rates, it is possible to beat pancreatic cancer. Research shows that patients diagnosed in time for surgery are more likely to live five years and beyond but that 73 per cent of Scots could not name one symptom of the condition, which is why Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland is pushing for more awareness about the signs of the disease!ā€Øā€Ø

Didnā€™t get many photos, as is the usual šŸ˜„, but here is what I have been doing for the past week and a half. Kirkcudbright Festival of Light.

Bit wet at points, and it definitely looks ten times better in person. Lots of other places lit up around Kirkcudbright too.

Thank you GLX Productions for the lights, and Hire and Supplies Ltd for the generator.

A brilliant write-up from Dumfries & Galloway Life explaining why D&G is simply the best place to live, and all the amazing things it has to offer.

Also, an amazing photo by Keith Kirk Photographer of Kirkcudbright Soaperie Gardens and Church from when they were lit up for World Parkinson's Day, thanks for the mention!

How about doing something in D&G that youā€™ve never done before this summer?

While we wait for the July issue of Dumfries & Galloway Life to arrive back from the printers tomorrow, here's a look back at how editor Andrea welcomed June (June issue 163, on sale from May 13) and why she says 'there's no place like home'.
'The great thing about living in Dumfries & Galloway is that you donā€™t need to leave the region to have the holiday of a lifetime. Itā€™s a destination of outstanding natural beauty, with rich history and culture, a vibrant arts and crafts scene, awe-inspiring landscapes, from dramatic coastlines to hills and forests, charming small towns and villages with a great mix of independent shops and people passionate about where they live.
'Thereā€™s an amazing natural larder, award-winning food and drink producers and chefs, and
sporting opportunities aplenty, from golf, (with more than 20 courses to choose from), to cycling (450-miles of routes and trails), to horseriding, walking and watersports.
'You can go camping or glamping, watch stunning sunrises in Sandhead, sunsets in Kirkcudbright, and stars in the Galloway Forest Dark Skies Park. You can enjoy arts, crafts and meeting the makers, enjoy theatre shows, performing arts, live music and festivals, climb Criffel, go fishing, or laze by a loch. You can visit Scotlandā€™s highest village (Wanlockhead) and the most southerly point in Scotland (Mull of Galloway) all without leaving D&G...
'So, dear readers, before we think about dashing off, maybe we need to pause and think about ā€˜dashing inā€™, and discovering, or re-discovering the delights of destinations on our doorstep. How about doing something in D&G that youā€™ve never done before this summer? After all, even when the world is your oyster, thereā€™s no place like home'

Apologies for the lack of posts in the last month, there have been a few events and lots of background work getting done. I have been so busy that I never got time to take any photos. Here are some photos of the Visit Kirkcudbright Leaflet which I have been producing for Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities, along with some other random photos that I had time to take. Graphic design isnā€™t something that I do on the regular, but it has been good to pass the time until events get started back up (hopefully sometime soonšŸ¤žšŸ¼)

Tonight I lit the Soaperie Gardens in Kirkcudbright in support of . There was also stories being played from people who have to deal with Parkinsonā€™s on a daily basis.

Over the last year, people with Parkinsons and those closest to them have faced isolation when they most needed support. is about reaching out and connecting people. Thereā€™s a whole world of support out there. Find out more at www.parkinsons.org.uk

Thank you, Fraser, for the help!

A survey conducted this year found that 93% of individuals and businesses in the live event supply chain have seen their income fall dramatically as a result of the pandemic ā€“ 65% have seen a fall of over 50%, and 30% a fall of over 90%.
As a result, 50% of individuals have had to take work outside of live events to supplement their income. A third have been forced to leave ā€“ or are considering leaving ā€“ the sector. On top of that, 43% of live event supply chain businesses say they donā€™t have the resources to last until the summer.
This makes us one of the most heavily impacted sectors from the pandemic, but despite this we have received practically no targeted Government support. Put simply, the Government clearly canā€™t see the desperate human and economic impact the pandemic has had on the live event supply chain.

Today would have normally consisted of setting up, running and packing up a PA system for a Remembrance Sunday service, but with Covid, the public services were cancelled to protect peopleā€™s health. Instead this evening, videos reminding people why we remember, and tales of many veterans who allowed us to be where we are today were show in front of the red Johnston School, to commemorate the many who lost their lives in conflict.

We will remember them, Lest we forget!

Remembrance honours those who served to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life. We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice.

We will remember them.

We remember the sacrifice of the Armed Forces from Britain and the Commonwealth.

We pay tribute to the special contribution of families and of the emergency services.

We acknowledge innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism.

We must never forget the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces, their families and the bravery of our veterans. Our security must never be taken for granted. Support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal at https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/ways-to-give/donate

Me, Myself & I

My name is Keiron. I am a young freelance event technician based in SW Scotland.

We work in the shadows of events, where you never see us, and nobody notices us, unless we screw up. Although you may never see us, we are still very much there, and we are a crucial part of said event. Everything you hear, see and use at events is made possible by us. The artist on stage may be singing, but you can only hear them because of sound engineers. They can only stand on that stage due to stage hands and riggers who built it. You can only see them due to lighting designers. The speakers, lights, and everything else only works due to the electricians. When you go to an event, the 3 artists on the stage are the main attraction, but that is only made possible by the large teams of people whose work is always present and visible, but always goes unnoticed.

I prefer lighting, as it allows me to express my creativity in a modern and visual way, ways which can blow peoples minds. So one day, my hope is to be working in the lighting department. However, being young, and currently only being small, I offer most services. This is more convenient for smaller events however. For example, on a large 5 day festival. It makes more sense to hire separate, specialist companies for each aspect, but for smaller events such as music nights, small concerts, wedding etc, it isnā€™t convenient having to hire 5 different companies with different staff, pricing and policies. That where what I come in. One company, one contact, one policy, all the aspects of the technical side of your event covered!

You have no idea how many times I get this, and how much it annoys me. It is literally like asking a child what they want to be when they grow up, then shutting them down and telling them they will never be able to do that. I may be young, but I know what I am doing. Iā€™m not a pro, I donā€™t know everything there is, and Iā€™ll be the first to tell you that. But I will only take on what I can do, or what I know Iā€™m capable of. I also do have quite a lot of experience. Iā€™ll admit, I have been very lucky to have gained some of the experiences I have. I have worked on many large scale events, providing tech, and not just as some little apprentice, 9/10 times its me calling the shots and making decisions. If you donā€™t believe me, and want to challenge me on that, be my guest, because I will prove you wrong!
