Winter Church Flowers

There is still so much growing in the depths of winter and if you look hard there are many signs of spring on its way too.

Included in these urns are catkins and cherry blossom. I took away branches of a cherry tree from someone in the village who was having their tree pruned and managed to save some from the shredder. I’ve always admired how early it flowers and whilst there were very few flowers the little pops of pink on their branches adds so much to an arrangement and my nod to the wild. I’ve planted three cherry trees over the past few years but they have a lot of growing to do before I can lop big branches off.

Whilst I don’t have any flowers flowering, other than the first of the hellebores and a few buds on my anemones, there are specialist growers like whose Lincolnshire grown tulips I always buy before mine arrive. The narcissi from the Isles of Scilly are amazing at this time of year too.

The gorgeous fresh eucalyptus I sourced from

All of the above were arranged in chicken wire and water.

A natural & sustainable farewell wreath created on a moss base and filled with British grown tulips & narcissi for a very dear mother to two lovely daughters.

All my farewell arrangements are compostable and created using sustainable mechanics and filled with British grown flowers and foliage.

Whilst I don’t have my own flowers to create farewell flowers at the moment I do buy in flowers from other British growers who have flowers outside of my flower season. From March to October flowers used to create farewell flowers will be grown by me.

Happy New Year.

For the past few years I’ve taken part in a social media challenge posting about me & my journey into becoming a flower farmer florist.

This year I’m trying to spend a little less time on social media in January but I’ve had some lovely new followers recently so I’d thought I’d introduce myself to anyone new to following me.

I’m Sophie and I grow on a small plot in my garden in Brightwell cm Sotwell, south Oxfordshire. Each year my growing space expands and I’ll be creating a few more beds again over the coming weeks. My flower season starts in March/April with tulips & anemones and my plot produces flowers changing with the seasons until the first frosts usually late October.

I sell my flowers locally as retail bouquets bought via my online shop or google searches for local florists or best of all word of mouth and repeat customers. I supply flowers to regular subscription customers and local businesses.

I love flowering up weddings and this picture is of a wedding I flowered up in June last year in Oxford. I offer a bouquet & DIY buckets of flowers for those wishing to create some of their own flowers to a full bespoke service where I do as much as you like.

When I need to supplement my own flowers I try to source from other local growers and from further afield if needed but always British grown.

I follow sustainable floristry practices and never ever use floral foam.

If you fancy a regular supply of my gorgeous seasonal flowers then I have a few spaces left for my subscription flowers. If you have recently got engaged huge congratulations and if you are looking for beautiful seasonal flowers for your big day I’d love to hear from you.

Last year I provided flowers for an interior design house shoot which I loved and would love to do more of. If you have an upcoming project you’d like flowers for then please get in touch.

Thanks for following and I hope to supply you with some of my flowers during the flower season and here’s hoping it’s a bumper crop for 2025.

Another fun morning of wreath making and that’s a wrap for workshops for me.

I’ve loved hosting so many workshops and have been blown away by all the stunning wreaths that have been created.

Now it’s time to make a wreath for our door which has been looking very bare.

It’s been a busy day of wreath making and what better way to get in the festive spirit than waking up to snowfall this morning.

These are a few of the festive wreaths that will be available to buy from festive birthday open days 21-23 November 10-3. If you’ve not been to one of Lisa’s open weekends before I highly recommend a visit as she has the most gorgeous barn full of wonderful vintage & antique finds. 4 Chalk Barns, Barracks Farm, Little Stoke.

It was so lovely to be creating flowers again for yesterday’s shoot of the most gorgeous home. Even though it’s been only a few weeks that my official flower season ended I miss the creativity of putting colours together and styling with flowers that my little business brings me during the flower filled months.

Flowers, whilst not necessarily the focal point, often play an important role in completing a styled shoot. Please drop me a DM or email if you have an upcoming project you’d like flowers for.

I’ve just planted out the first batch of ranunculus that have really good root systems after just a few weeks. These have gone in the polytunnel where they should put on some good growth over the next few weeks and hopefully be flowering by April.

I’m excited to let you know about the lovely wreath workshops I’m holding in December at some fabulous local venues.

I’ll be back at the gorgeous Fison Barn at The Earth Trust on the evening of Tuesday 3 December. Tickets will be available to purchase via The Earth Trust very soon.

I’m also hosting again at the Five Little Pigs restaurant where they’ll be putting on a delicious seasonal feast after the workshop. Tickets will be sold via The Five Little Pigs.

I’m also excited to be holding 2 workshops at The Bear, North Moreton this year. The first is on the evening of the 5th where you will get to enjoy a glass of fizz or mulled wine with some charcuterie boards and they’re also offering 20% off food purchased that evening. £65 pp

I am also holding a morning workshop at The Bear in collaboration with where you can stay for a delicious 2 course lunch after the workshop. This workshop is £60 pp or £80 with a 2 course lunch. To book a place on this workshop you can contact me or email [email protected]. If you don’t know Nix of Nixercise she runs the most brilliant outdoor classes at the Wittenham clumps and The Blue Tin, Ipsden plus a couple of indoor classes. I do her runfit class on Monday morning at the clumps and it’s a great way to start the week come rain or shine.

If you’d like more info on any of these workshops or to book a space please get in touch via DM or email [email protected]

If you can’t make any of the above dates and would like to get a group together I can host upto 8 people in my studio. Please contact me for further details.

Polytunnel update

Yesterday I cleared the polytunnel in preparation for planting it with ranunculus & anemones and some hardy annuals. It had become rather overgrown with weeds and I’d left some triffid like ammi majus in there to collect seed from, along with the dried out sweet pea vines. There are a few chrysanthemum growing in there that are yet to flower and a few zinnias too.

I’ll add a layer of compost to help retain moisture over winter and feed the soil.

Last week I soaked my anemone & ranunculus corms and put them in compost with a covering of vermiculite to presprout before I plant them out. Check out picture 2 & 3 to see how quickly they’re sprouting.

I will be doing another batch of ranunculus in a week or so and more in early spring so I have a long succession of these beauties to look forward to next year.
