I love costumes. Well, that is to say, I love costumes now. I used to be terrified of dressing up as a child. I blame my parents. At the age of 13 they made me dress up as a Frenchman with a string of real onions around my neck! I had to take this costume on a school ski trip to France and we were to entertain the hotel guests with a fancy dress costume competition. YES - real onions in a suitcase with all my clothes. YES - dressed as a Frenchman to entertain some poor French guests who kindly accommodated what they no doubt consider a strange English custom!
As I grew up, I started to realise that costumes could be fun, if you had some say in what you were wearing! Then as a Mum I had many an experience where, with virtually no notice, I had to create or source a costume for a school event. Determined to make sure my children loved costumes (to make amends for my childhood trauma) I set about making or sourcing costumes for them to enjoy.
I have bought costumes, I have adored making costumes and my children have enjoyed wearing costumes. Mission accomplished? Well no, as always in my heart I feel a bit sad that after all the effort or financial outlay, the costume is shown in all its splendour for such a brief moment. Then where does it end up? In a wardrobe. Never to see another outing or performance.
2 years ago myself and a friend set up a costume store for our school. We called our store Mr Ben. It has been the best experience and has ignited a real costume passion in me. Parents donate costumes and we hire them back for class assemblies, school outings, Halloween, Nativity plays, World Book Day to name but a few. All hire fees go to the school PTA and they in turn buy essential extras for our children. We have a team of Mums running Mr Ben now and about 300 costumes and accessories. We save parents money and we set an excellent example with our re-use, recycle and reduce landfill waste ethos.
