The CIS Tower is a high-rise office building on Miller Street in Manchester, England. Designed for the Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) by architects Gordon Tait and G. S. Hay, the building was completed in 1962 and rises to 118 m (387 ft) in height. As of 2023, the Grade II listed building is Greater Manchester's 11th-tallest building and the tallest office building in the United Kingdom outside London. The tower remained as built for over 40 years, until maintenance issues on the service tower required an extensive renovation, which included covering its façade in photovoltaic panels.

A quick, yummy fact:
Political & social upheaval, meant many Italians fled to Manchester, with many settling in Ancoats. One of those immigrants was Antonio Valvona, who lived on Great Ancoats Street and he was credited with inventing the Ice Cream cone 🍦

Manchester was established by the Romans in AD 79. They positioned a fort near a crossing point on the River Medlock, in between two hills that according to them looked like b***s.

The name “Mamucium”, meaning “Breast shaped hills” was then given. Later on, the Normans arrived and established a new settlement.

CIS Tower: The original Manchester skyscraper, being built in 1959 📸 Mcr Libraries

Turn back time to our Iconic Eyesore feature last year. Here you can see the chimneys of the Cotton Mills and the heavy feel of grime and industry, dominating the streets below. A far cry from the glass and steel laced skyline of today.

Giving the blokes who built the Empire State a run for their money in the first photograph!

Let’s just not mention the health and safety…

Ogden Reservoir is a reservoir in the Piethorne Valley, close to Milnrow and Newhey in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, within Greater Manchester, England.

A beautiful walk, with choices of steep valley hill climbs or walk around the 3 waters for a mud free trek. Perfect for a few hours of fresh air!

Today team Doorstep had the absolute privilege of visiting the new Mcr highline at Castlefield Viaduct.

A beautiful and reflective green space above the city, where history meets nature.

Here you can walk or sit and take in the city views and peaceful sounds.. and yes, even the noise from the tram seemed tranquil up there ☺️

This beautiful listed sky garden has been brought to Mcr by the National Trust and features lots of collabs from different companies, charities and community groups throughout. There are so many stunning aspects to this amazing space and we’ll have more to share over on our website very soon 👀

Definitely one to check out if you haven’t already. To visit Mcrs first sky park just choose a time slot and your free tickets online at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castlefield-viaduct 🌸

Big thanks to guides Beth and Kate for a lovely experience today 💚

16/08/2022

Walking Through History:
Today marks the anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, which took place in a part of the city known as St Peter's Field.
On Monday 16 August 1819 a crowd of around 60,000 people had gathered peacefully to express the need for parliamentary reform. These men, women and children had marched in from all over Gtr Mcr and beyond. The reformers wanted the vote for every man, regardless of income and for elections to be held every year using a secret ballot, meaning that nobody knew who you had voted for.
Although the gathering was peaceful, local magistrates called in the army to arrest the leader, Henry Hunt and several other speakers. The innocent protestors also fell victim to the cavalry, as they were no match for the well armed soldiers, who were mostly on horseback as they charged through the crowds. Referred to as "the bloodiest political event of the 19th century on English soil”, this atrocity was first labelled the "Peterloo massacre" by the Manchester Observer in reference to the bloody Battle of Waterloo which had taken place four years earlier.
Pictured you can see the boundary wall, the commemoration plaque and the more recent memorial by the artist Jeremy Deller, featuring eleven concentric circles of local stone engraved with the names and the places from which the victims came. Other photos show some of the places where Peterloo is referenced across the city, plus artwork depicting the scene by Richard Carlile, an important agitator for the establishment of universal suffrage and freedom of the press in the United Kingdom. Carlile was the first to give a full report of what had happened, in Sherwin's Weekly Political Register of 18 August 1819. His placards proclaimed "Horrid Massacres at Manchester".
Peterloo is remembered as the beginning of the suffrage movement and today we remember the brave people who’s lives were lost.
There’s lots of cool windows into the past on display around our vibrant city and lots more blogs over on our site.
Tag us to share your city walking snaps and interesting finds 📸

Beautiful snaps just in this evening from two of our city’s ever talented photographers.

Stunning as always. We love the silhouettes of the cranes on both shots. A skyline staple in our ever evolving city.

As we head into Friday, keep your eyes peeled for a couple of guest playlists to soundtrack your weekend and anyone looking up at the nice clear skies across Gtr Mcr tonight should make those wishes, as you may even spot some shooting stars from the Perseid meteor shower…
