Hey everyone,

Not sure what happened today, but I've been flooded with Halloween forms, emails, and questions. I wanted to give you all an update.

Normally, our Halloween event is planned a year in advance, but with the changing trends in ticket sales this year (with the majority of people booking the week of the event), I'm in a bit of a holding pattern. While I do have a provisional date, nothing is set in stone yet.

I'm running this as a one-person company. Pre-COVID, the Halloween event at Aden was run by another company with funding from Shell, which covered major expenses like fireworks. Without that support now, and given the significant costs of lighting, security, and other logistics, it's a tough financial challenge. These large events at Aden run into five figures, and I’m sure you can imagine how risky that is without knowing there is enough interest to cover costs. While I love organising these events, it’s also my job, and I can’t spend months planning something that might not even cover its costs. I have to pay my bills too.

I've spent the entire year applying for grants and seeking sponsorships, but without them, or advance ticket sales, taking on this financial risk alone isn't something I'm willing to do this year. Before COVID, our Halloween events would sell out 6 months in advance – showing the interest which meant we could invest in adding more to the events and plan the correct number of event staff/security, etc. This is why so many events companies across the UK are choosing not to go ahead with their events this year.

Obviously, Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I don't love it enough that I'm willing to risk debt over it.

Another point to consider is the weather. With it being so temperamental, I'm also tired of the complaints and abuse and negative reviews I get about running an event in the rain. Unfortunately, insurance does not pay out for rain, so we have to accept that it may be wet out. We live in Scotland...

I’m still waiting to hear back about a few grants and have sent out hundreds—probably thousands—of sponsorship inquiries with no luck so far. Despite having a few awards for bringing unique events and tourism to the area, it’s still not enough to secure the financial support we need.

I’ll keep you updated as things progress.
