We’ve been a little quiet on here since we were out in the Alps.

It’s been non-stop working across a number of really exciting and innovative projects that we hope we get to share with you soon.

One thing we enjoy about our work is the great people & businesses we get to meet.

We recently spent the day with some of the team at Driven International and were hugely impressed with their approach, level of expertise and the extent of their international experience.

They certainly weren’t phased by our discussions and we hope to be working collaboratively with them in the near future.

We’ve been out exploring locally whilst here in the Alps. It’s been a perfect location to reflect on the last 18 months and where we are now heading into 2022, the two are worlds away.

Did you watch the racing at the Collins Cup last month? The ever forward-thinking PTO used a Bolt camera to capture some of the action. This type of camera, the fastest of its kind, has never been used in sport before. You’re more likely to see it behind the scenes at the movies, where it has been used in films such as Dr Strange, one of the Marvel series.

Last month’s Collins Cup was a real showcase of the best talent, drama and tactics that the world of triathlon has to offer and we were super excited to be involved behind the scenes at the inaugural event.

Staged by Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), this Ryder Cup-inspired format saw teams of 12 representing USA, Europe and Internationals pitched against each other on a 2km swim, 80km bike, and 18km run course in Šamorín, Slovakia.

The format involved 12 races, 6 female and 6 male, featuring one athlete from each of the three geographic teams. At the end of a full day of exciting racing, one team was crowned the winner.

The Collins Cup was the who's who in the triathlon world, bringing together Olympic Triathletes, such as Katie Zaferes, and Multi World Champions, Daniela Ryf and Jan Frodeno. Team Captains were triathlon Sporting Legends including the likes of Simon Whitfiled, Natashca Baddaman, Normann Stadler and Lisa Bentley.

All the action was broadcast live on Eurosport with commentary from seasoned pros, including Phil Ligget and Alex Payne.

It was an honour to be drafted in as event management support on such a prestigious event. We supported the delivery of the technical competition management, including transition set up and management, providing guidance and support around race protocols, such as swim start procedures, and athlete services support.

We are still catching our breath after an amazing week in the beautiful Lake District last week. Lisa was Operations Director for the Keswick Mountain Festival (KMF), which saw over 20,000 visitors and 100+ exhibitors from across the outdoor industry come together over 2.5 days.

The festival takes place on the shores of Derwent Water near Keswick and boasts 360 degrees views of one the most stunning areas in the Lakes District. To the south you can see Cat Bells and to the north, Skiddaw. A truly amazing location for an event.

This family-friendly festival was all about inspiring people to get out into the great outdoors. There was also an accessibility zone with exhibitors that supported access into the outdoors for those with disabilities, helping to make the outdoors a welcoming place for all.

Spectator and participation sports included running, cycling, swimming, triathlon, aquathon, hiking and more. There was a full programme of talks from world class athletes, mountaineers and adventurers as well as local legends, and live music from bands such as Space and Republica.

First established in 2007, KMF is now one of the UK’s largest Mountain Festivals. As you can imagine, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make it all happen and it requires a lot of attention to detail. See our pictures for a sneak peak at some of what our work involved during the five build days and two de-rig days.

We are excited to be working with the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) at the end of the month, supporting their delivery of the inaugural Collins Cup in Slovakia.

This hotly anticipated triathlon will see the greatest triathletes from across the globe assemble into competing regions – Europe, Internationals and US – at one major event.

The Collins Cup was inspired by and named after Judy and John Collins, who 40 years ago were instrumental in establishing the sport of triathlon by inaugurating a long distance event in Kona, Hawaii.

From its earliest days, the competition has included men and women racing the same distance, over the same course, on the same day for equal prize money. This has always been an important principle of the Collins and the cornerstone of the philosophy of the PTO and one of the reasons we love the sport and working with such organisations.

Check out their video to see what it’s all about.

What a journey. Lisa took on two mentees who wanted to further develop their career within the world of major sports event management.

We are so pleased to report that both mentees by the end of the 6 month programme successfully secured work that suited their chosen career path within major sports events. Both mentees and mentors learnt about themselves and widened their network.

We would highly recommend the experience as a mentor or mentee and have opened up opportunities for the next programme.

We’ve been busy this weekend working on an exciting ultra running event by Rat Race. Their inaugural Canterbury Trails is based on a pilgrimage and is a 100+km ultra from Southwark Cathedral in London to Canterbury in Kent along some fantastic urban and rural trails. We were drafted in to support the event director with course logistics to ensure the smooth running of this 25 hour event.

Great work by the RR events team on the delivery of a successful event and a huge well done to all the finishers.

WOW! The Olympics has begun with huge excitement already. We've been glued to our TVs watching as much action as we can.

Although the modern Olympics may have been around for well over a century, they keep moving forward and innovating. This year the IOC has introduced five new sports to the programme - Sport Climbing, Skateboarding, Surfing, Sotfball/Baseball and Karate. New women's events and mixed gender events have also been introduced in sports like athletics (mixed 4x400m relay), cycling (women's madison), swimming (4x100m mixed medley relay and women's 1500m freestyle) and triathlon (mixed relay).

Team GB's youngest ever summer Olympian at just 13, Sky Brown, competes on Wednesday in the women's park skateboarding discipline. For those new to the sport, park skateboarding takes place on a hollowed-out course with lots of curves. Competitors climb the curves at speed, performing mid-air tricks.

Did you catch the other discipline of street skateboarding these last two days? It was full of fun and thrills, with athletes negotiating obstacles such as kerbs, stairs and rails, to demonstrate their skills and tricks.

The surfing competition continues over the next week and sport climbing starts tomorrow. We're looking forward to seeing how these competitons in particular unfold. With both physical and mental agility required, sport climbing might throw up some interesting battles to watch!

The pinnacle of live sport is back! We are so excited to see the Olympics begin after what feels like a really long wait. Get ready for just over 2 weeks of wall to wall sports and all the drama, stories and emotions that come with the Games.

Tokyo 2020 will see over 11,000 athletes compete in 41 different sports. We're really looking forward to watching the MTBing, triathlon and road cycling events in the first week. Especially with all the excitement already in the men's road race this morning. Bring it on!

Which sports will you be getting up early to watch?

Right now, our news feeds are buzzing with stories, pictures, articles, events and initiatives around International Women’s Day and women’s history month. They shine a light on the inequalities in our society, whilst celebrating the achievements of the women who have overcome them.

There’s no doubt it’s wonderful to have this current focus, but gender equality isn’t just a once a year campaign. It’s an ongoing story in which we can all play a part, now more than ever.

The Covid-19 pandemic has put the many inequalities that exist across our society into the spotlight, none more so than in sport. Our recent blog post highlights this and suggests what you can do to help change the narrative - https://breakthroughevents.co.uk/blog/covid-impact-on-female-sport.

It's an exciting time for women's sport. There’s a feeling in the air that we’re reaching a tipping point and that we have to keep moving forwards, in spite of the many setbacks of the pandemic. Women all over the world are using their voices and amplifying others to challenge the inequalities that exist within sport and redefine the status quo. The narrative needs to change.

We’ve pulled together a selection of articles, events and initiatives that we feel demonstrate that change is required at all levels and highlight where positive change is already happening. This list isn’t exhaustive and we’d love you to share with us what else you’ve seen.

Articles & Publications:
The Telegraph has written a fantastic summary of the history of IWD, why it’s still needed over a century later, how you can get involved and what’s happening around the world to celebrate it.
www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/international-womens-day-2021-still-needed-celebrate-virtually/

Cycling Weekly has just launched its IWD issue. Guest editor, Elinor Barker, gives us “a glimpse into the future; when sport media no longer needs to address the problems we face and can focus on women’s interests. On interesting women. When we are truly treated as equals, without the need for ‘female’ to prefix ‘cyclist’.” www.cyclingweekly.com/publication/cycling-weekly/cycling-weekly-march-4-issue-special-edition-international-womens-day

Events:
Beryl Bikes are hosting 4 free nightly webinars from an amazing lineup of women who are leading the way in business, media, tech and micromobility.

Zwift is celebrating the strides taken for women’s sport equality while recognising and promoting further gains to be had. Throughout March, Zwift is calling on the community to celebrate, connect and engage in an effort to raise awareness for gender equality in sport through a series of Zwift rides, runs and podcasts - https://zwiftinsider.com/wrrs/

Initiatives:
Eurovision Sport has published a new media handbook, ‘Reimagining Sport: Pathways to Gender-Balanced Media Coverage’, as part of its mission to drive greater and more consistent coverage of women’s sport in the media. It seeks to build on women’s sport’s impressive upward trajectory over the last few years.

Four-time Olympic medalist Angela Ruggiero’s Sports Innovation Lab, a market intelligence firm, is launching a women’s leadership board comprising 22 female executives from the sports, media and technology industries. Their goal is to use the Sports Innovation Lab’s data and research to support each individual member’s continued professional success and leverage the collective power of the network.

Driven by the lack of coverage of female athletes in the media, a diverse group of four US Olympians have decided to change the narrative. They’ve come together to create ‘Togethxr’, a media and commerce company designed to elevate women’s voices, around but not exclusively within sports.

19/02/2021

A survey conducted this year found that 93% of individuals and businesses in the live event supply chain have seen their income fall dramatically as a result of the pandemic – 65% have seen a fall of over 50%, and 30% a fall of over 90%.

As a result, 50% of individuals have had to take work outside of live events to supplement their income. A third have been forced to leave – or are considering leaving – the sector. On top of that, 43% of live event supply chain businesses say they don’t have the resources to last until the summer.

This makes us one of the most heavily impacted sectors from the pandemic, but despite this we have received practically no targeted Government support. Put simply, the Government clearly can’t see the desperate human and economic impact the pandemic has had on the live event supply chain.

That's why we're calling for:

Visibility in Government: the individuals and companies in the live event supply chain are frequently overlooked, therefore we need to be formally recognised by Government as a sector, and included in the data they use to target support.

Support to survive: Currently, many in our sector have been unjustly excluded from financial support, this must change or we will lose our cultural expression and reputation for delivering world class events.

Pathway to reopening: Despite knowing it takes many months of preproduction work to make a live event happen, we have been given no clear pathway to reopening. On top of that, the Government has refused to introduce a COVID-19 cancellation insurance scheme, despite the whole live events industry calling for this.

Was anyone else glued to the TV this weekend watching the UCI World Cyclocross Championships? We were on the edge of our seats with excitement as all the action unfolded on the beach in Ostend, Belgium. Anything can happen in cyclocross, that's what makes it so fun to watch, and the world champs certainly didn't disappoint.

It was touch and go last weekend when the event was almost called off due to a rise in local Covid cases. We really felt for the organisers who have spent so much time and energy over the last four years working to put the event on. They already had to change things up and took a hit in revenues when they had to make it a closed door event for everyone's safety. So for it almost to be called off at the last minute was gut wrenching.

It will have been a busy week for the organisers as they worked tirelessly with the government, local council and mayor, all teams and the limited media who were allowed to attend the race to ensure that very strict Covid-19 protocols were followed in order for the event to go ahead. As part of this they had to further limited the number of people allowed on the site for the event and made their Covid protocols even stricter. They were really determined to make the event happen for the love of the sport, for the riders and for the fans.

As we've seen in many sporting events over the last 6 months, there were no spectators watching live, which must be a bit strange for the athletes, but the races were broadcast live in many countries around the world for fans to enjoy. And enjoy it we did! It was so great to have live sport to watch again!

With over 15 years' experience in planning and delivering on some of the world's most iconic and major sports events & programmes Lisa’s knowledge and insights are world-class. She knows the event management business inside out and understands what it takes to transform an event from ordinary to outstanding.

Just as we at BTE continually seek to ask questions and challenge our assumptions so we can stay innovative and dynamic, we love to help others do the same. We also want to invest in the future of the events industry by sharing our experience and insights with others to help it grow and thrive.

These are just a couple of the reasons that Lisa signed up as a mentor for event management students and recent graduates with EM Mentoring.

This week she's had her first calls with her two mentees and she's super excited to be mentoring them one on one for the next six months. Bring it on!

We are ready and raring to be back at the start/finish gantries at major events again just as soon as the gun fires to tell us it’s safe to do so! We know you’re all missing live events as much as we are and so today we take a fond look back at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Lisa was the Technical Operations Manager for Triathlon at Glasgow 2014. This was the first time that a major games had included the hugely popular Mixed Relay race in the triathlon programme. Lisa was proud to be part of the team that successfully delivered the inaugural race, and the entire triathlon programme, as part of the Commonwealth Games that year.

The mixed relay is such an action-packed format it’s no surprise that it has grown further in popularity since 2014 and also that it will be part of the Olympics programme in Tokyo for the first time this year (all being well and the Games go ahead) - https://tokyo2020.org/en/schedule/triathlon-schedule. We’d like to think that the success of the mixed relay at Glasgow 2014 played a part in encouraging World Triathlon and IOC to include the event in the games!

In fact, the mixed relay concept is an important part of the overall IOC Agenda 2020, as the IOC sees it as a catalyst for the promotion of female athletes within NOCs around the world. We’ve already seen the changes the IOC has made to the cycling programme to make the participation of men and women more equal across the various cycling disciplines and events. The triathlon mixed relay format puts male and female athletes on an equitable footing in the same race, as both are equally important to the success of their team overall.

It’s such an exciting addition to the sport and we certainly can’t wait to watch it at the Olympics.
